At the end of the video when I put pressure more quickly, you can hear the bike chain sound.

Have you had the dreaded cam chain tensioner looked at / replaced? A known issue with 2010 & previous that i personally am a victim of...

I guess I will have to take it to my mechanic as my warranty just ran out.

Definitely doesn't sound like waste gate rattle - get it looked at and if it's a known issue you may still be able to get it covered under warranty.

Does anyone know if there is a 5yr warranty on powertrain ? As my 3yr warranty just ran out I'm afraid of the cost to fix this problem.
Also was told maybe the engine may need to be replaced? If it's the chain tensioner.

                Bugger

I hope VW come to the party as it's a known fault/issue with this engine.

also another victim to the Timing Chain issue, just bought the car from Melbourne and for the past week or so when we start it cold it has a rattle that disappears after about 2-3 seconds. Went to VW and the Technician said it is definitely the timing chain and it's booked in for the 21st so we have no car to drive until then. Heaps spewing. Fortunately, VW have agreed to pay for it even thought it's out of its 3 year/100,000km warranty. I'll let you guys know how I go after it's repaired.

Much better that VW pay for it than you have to.

Out of interest does anyone know when VW went away from the timing chain design? And how you know if you've got one?

I just diagnosed a Mk6 Gti the other day, fairly new too, made me cringe when the chain was flapping in the wind. New engine reqd.
Im hoping its a one off, no signs or anything just bang and all over.

I have a feeling the tensioner was revised for 2011 models & onward... Feel quite lucky to have had my warranty honored by VW given i run a tuned ECU & do my own 'in-between' servicing... Now i have a 2010 model with 75000 k's on the odo, but with an engine that runs like a dream with 15000 k's on it!

Do you know if they replaced the engine and if your new one has the updated design? Be interested to know if they replaced it with the updated engine...

And also good to know that they replaced it even though you had a tune. Was your vehicle flagged with VW as modified?

I'm hoping my 2011 Tig has the updated design and never has this issue. The only time I've been to the dealer is for some minor warranty work but the lovely service guys still felt the need to flag my vehicle.

The entire engine was replaced, even basic clip-in items like the dip stick & engine cover. It had to be shipped out of Germany in Feb this year, so most likely a 2012 manufactured engine. I was tight-lipped about the tune & it wasn't brought up at all. It either wasn't noticed, or deemed to not have been the cause of the failure.

Worst part of the experience was having to drive a worn out Tiida from Europcar for 5 weeks...

Did Volkswagen pay for the hire car, cause I'm without a car at the moment and they never mentioned it?

I have 2010 GTI MK6 as well as my Tiguan (which just has tensioner replaced under warranty), havent heard the rattle in the GTI yet. Problem is the GTI is out of warranty by a few months. Hope I am a lucky one
