Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Head unit install - RCD310 -> RCD510

    Hi guys,

So I called up Barloworld Glen Waverley and they quoted me $140 for install of the RCD 510 and Barloworld Moorabbin quoted me a price of $340 because it "has to be coded etc".
After receiving both those quotes i went to super cheap auto, bought myself some prying tools and a torx 20 screwdriver and thought surely it can't be that hard, so I'm now going to attempt to install it myself.

Is there anyone in the melbourne area that has experience coding the rcd 510 so it works with my optical parking sensors and bluetooth etc?

    Cheers,
    Cody

P.S. I realise there is a car audio and electronics section, but I'm aiming this at Tiguan owners as hopefully someone in the melbourne area with a tiguan has been down the same path and will know exactly what i need for the tiguan.

It is highly unlikely any coding will required.

If I were you I'd install it and see how it goes. The only thing you will need is the security code and that is entered via the touch screen anyway.

I have installed RCD510s in my Tiguan and Multivan with no issues and NO coding. Parking and BT just worked afterwards!

In the Tiguan it is a very easy install, no more than 5mins required ...... those VW dealers are ripping you off!

The various ones I have installed for people in different cars inc Skoda and VW didn't need coding to work per se..

AFAIK the only coding you need it to get the MFD to display directions for you, otherwise everything else should just work

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

You only need to code the radio if it is the SatNav RNS510 for the MFD.

RCD510, as mentioned here does not need any coding.

Heh, I misread that as RNS not RCD

                SUCCESS!

Did the install and everything works fine. No coding needed, the climate control, ops and bluetooth all works fine.

One small thing that's going to annoy me though is the bezel isn't sitting as far back as possible and there's a small gap:

                and

Bit hard to see in the photo but its annoying me.. I might take it off again and try pull the head unit forward a bit as i tried pushing the bezel and it doesn't move back any further.

Nice work mate, I'm glad it was problem free. I was quoted around the same price from local VW dealerships, think the lowest was $350 and the highest was $450, just to pull out the RCD 310 and stick the RCD 510 in my 2010 Golf. Thought it was a joke so, like you, i went out and got the tools and set to work.

All works perfectly except when i push the MEDIA button it says " No medium available", not sure why is says "medium" and not "media". I've been scouring the web trying to find such a thing, but I can't find any trace.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

I can reach the media menu when I put a CD in, but the AUX function is blacked out. When i plugged my iphone into the AUX port in the center console, on the phones locked screen with the itunes sub menu it said for the song name "RNS 510 secret menu"? Which i thought was quite odd as it's and RCD 510.

Thinking it must be a coding issue, so reluctantly, the dealership may be getting some coin out of me. The unit was taken out of an 2011 Amarok and it's a Premium 8. If that makes any difference?

                      Thanks
                      Blair

Blair it definitely sounds like a coding issue have a word or two with Kamold in the audio section of this forum he may be able to sort you out as he is in your part of the world. It will probably cost you a carton!

Just a quick question. Where did you get your RCD510? From dealer or anywhere else? How much did you pay for that? My tiguan will arrive next week and want to replace with RCD510.

Thanks for the help mate, happy to part with a carton. I'll get onto Kamold once I install a bluetooth unit, get all the coding done at once.

Zchoanyy, I got the RCD510 off ebay (couple had removed it from their Amarok for an after market Sat nav), cost me $260 all up. I was looking for probably 2 weeks before one came up at a reasonable price. Best of luck mate.

I also bought mine off eBay for $300.

Mine was removed from a scirocco and I think because sciroccos come with dual climate controls and Bluetooth etc, everything connected easily and problem free.
