Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sorry... but should that read "it wasn't until 2012 when these went to bench tuning...." ? I thought 'pre-facelift' meant pre 2012?

Just thought an additional re-clarification may be needed!

    • So has anyone tuned their 118?
      What are you experiences?
Has anyone put their car on a Dyno before and after tuning to see the difference?
Ours is booked in with only 320km on the clock though it should be closer to 1000 after the Easter weekend away.
They're having to get a new file made for the new ECU which suggest I'm the first person from this batch of ECUS??

I'm quite impressed with the performance of the 1.4 engine already so am quite looking forward to seeing what transpires.
Tiguan MY12 118TSI, white, no frills..... Had ANS810 ... Note the HAD ..... Now got RCD510 supplemented by 7" Android TomTom mounted on a HoldMyPhone .... Upgraded speakers Vibe BlackAir front splits and MBQuartz 12" ported sub driven from Infinity Reference 5350a amp .... oh and added fun

Who are you booked in with? All tunes have to start with an original file at some point.

Good pick Matt! Yes I meant to say pre-2012 models on the Tig. That might be what he meant to say - I hope??

Anyone heard of Australian Performance Tuning Group (ATPG)?

APR dealer in Mona Vale. They bench extracted my ECU and have sent it of to the guys in US. Should get it sorted in the next few days but am off up the coast on holiday then NZ on business so won't get it installed till the 23rd. Waiting is painful but exciting

Did you have to wait long for the extract?

Should have been only a short time, but why could they not get the new software back to you within the day?
No need to have to wait days for software to be modded.
                Not from us anyways.

                • Bench extract took less than hour, dealer on hols for Easter, now we're up coast then straight to NZ.
So the file is probably ready but I can't get it it for 2 weeks.
                  The foreplay is good though

Its not returned via email, it gets processed & placed on the APR server, so once ready, it can be programmed on the car whilst the customer has a coffee (not overnight).

Also the 4 engine program switching routine, security & anti theft options go in, so its not just a "one option" program.

                    • Just out of curiosity... By just tuning the software, how can one ascertain the increase in power... Do all cars after getting ECU tuned get a dyno run?

Also, if cars are bench tuned or if 'set maps' are just 'uploaded' into the the ECU, without running the car on dyno... Does that mean the maps are not 'custom tuned'? Meaning, "oh it's a GTI, use this GTI map. A Tiguan? Use this Tiguan map." does it work like that?

If not, what does 'custom tune' mean? Does it mean, the tuner will take into consideration any hardware upgrades u might have and tune accordingly? Even without a dyno run to test a 'before' and perhaps different 'after' scenarios?

Getting a little bit confused. :p any advise and enlightenment of knowledge for learning appreciated - especially from a tuner's perspective or buyers experience. Thanks!

Which year/model of Tig is your car? I really hope we have the same model/ECU code so I don't have to wait

Or perhaps Guy_H knows the model since you have access to the file?

                            Hi,
Custom tuning is done on a Dyno. It's specific to that car with that air in take mods with that etc etc etc. I had it done on my old Ford and it can be good or can be very bad . Ford don't spend millions of dollars for nothing. A bad tuner with no experience , or a good tuner on a bad day can get it wrong.
Pretty much all custom tunes start out as a generic tune though. I went from 150awkw to 240awkw with a good tune and change of air filter.

With VWs it's a bit different. Essentially VW themselves are a tuning house. They take 1 engine and produce 3 or 4 tunes and sell one as a low spec model and another as a GTI. Gross over simplification but that's the gist of it.
APR do a similar job . They take those 3 or 4 tunes, maybe add a little spice and sell them to us at about 1/3rd the cost that VW charge to buy the higher spec engine.
But of course you can't always just buy the upgraded engine ; sometimes it comes with leather and comfort and ....
So, no, I don't suddenly have a Polo/Golf/Tig GTI but I have the guts of the same engine and a big smile on my face for not a lot of coin.
I also have potentially no warranty,
nor do I have a Dyno graph for my car; just a generic one measured during testing by APR.

Bench tuning specifically in this case means they have to get the ECU on the bench to extract the original file. Normally they would just plug into the OBD11 port. Either way the then modify the performance bit of the program leaving the other bits that control the lights etc alone. And put it back on your car.

Ps. No disrespect to APR. You do a great job; it's why I bought the 118 in the first place.

I haven't benched mine yet, so I wouldn't have any idea.

Oh... looks like Whiskywallah is a 118, so probably different to my 132...

                              • We just did a new 132kw "locked out" ECU last night.

No need to stick yours on a bench to get the number, you can read the ECU information with VCDS tool or drop into your nearest APR dealer to get it read out!
