Hyundai ix35 vs. Tiguan

Hey guys,

I am in the process of selecting my new car

I have run it down to either a Tiguan or the new ix35 TDI.

On paper, the ix35 has many more features over the Tiguan, the ix35's only 38K drive away!

Any thoughts on this would be good.

The tiguan is only 38k Drive away for the base model petrol add a couple more for the diesel.



I wouldn't buy the hyundai purely becasue it looks cheap, doesn't have 4-motion and lacks euro quality.

Have a look at the IX35 reviews and see how they compare it to the tiguan.

Shop around for the Tig. I was looking at it and found some really good prices on tdi auto.

If resale is important to you go the VW.

Your 2 main arguments for the Tiguan are probably Safety and Build Quality (which translates to durability).

The main argument against it in favour of the Hyundai is price. Not bang-for-buck mind you, as I think the Tig would have the bang-for-buck advantage simply because of it's build quality and resale value. But there is no denying that the final pricetag of the Tig is going to be higher, and the running costs (servicing, insurance, etc) is going to be higher.

I had a similar dilema when I was looking to buy, but I was comparing the Renault Koleos to the Tig. At the end of the day the Tig was a safer bet for me, but the Koleos was a serious contender. I have since read that the X-Trail (which is the platform the Koleos is built on) has major short-comings when it comes to offroad work as the drivetrain overheats if put under any serious stress (eg. beach driving). It still gave bang-for-buck though I must admit.

I looked at ix35 yesterday and brought the brochure with me home. I must admit the look is good and seats feel ok, I didn't road tested, since I wouldn't buy it. Why?

Because of the safety and also IMO 4cyl. Common rail diesel that is tuned to have 135kW and 392Nm torque from the factory, I can see short life of that engine and Hyundai's own 6speed auto is to prove yet its reliability. I owned the Jeep Cherokee from new with 2.8L CRD and 5speed MB auto that couldn't sustain 400Nm torque and every Jeep Cherokee CRD (2005-2006) was recalled and reprogrammed/down tuned to much lesser output.

If you want cheap fruit buy the Hyundai. If you want an enjoyable drive (in a qualiy environment) then buy the Tiguan. Its as simple as that.

There is a recent article in Wheels magazine that reflects on why Hyundais are so bad to drive. Turns out that the chassis engineers working at Hyundai for the majority don't even have driving licences ..... and never take a car theyve designed for a drive to see what it can do.

Those that can actually drive also never leave the congested cities to xperience an open road with some twisty bits .....

We've had a Hyundai (2003 Getz) and the drive was aweful even though it had all these "features". Reading this article made me understand why the drive was so poor.

have you considered a Sante fe?

I love our Tig, but if I was looking for a slightly larger vehicle I would at least test drive the Sante fe. The new Sante Fe R certainly looks good on paper. I have driven the previous model and while not as refined as the Tig, it was certainly likeable and the new model looks better than the old.

My little 98 Hyundai excel is the most reliable and cheapest car I have ever owned, including a Corolla I once had. Its not a brilliant car, but I quite enjoy driving it - its honest. Report below US based, but look under section titled "Good news from Europe", Toureg did very badly and the Tig only average, but the Jetta did well and VW looks to be improving.

Again dont get me wrong, I love our Tig - if you are buying a new car I reckon you want to end up with something you look forward to driving every time, and thats exactly how I feel about the Tig.

All I am saying is go test drive some options for yourself, hell I almost discounted the Tig until I drove it. The feel of a car is important - what it looks like on paper or others opinions are useful, but not as relevant as actually having a good test drive.

The trouble is Sharkie that ix35 is not cheap. It's well over $40k on the road for top of the range.
What else can you have for $40K ? I think, that just almost any small SUV.

If you can't get a good price, might be worth a flight to Canberra or Newcastle as they have dealers on here as users who are willing to deal.

$100 flight to save $2-3k would be worth it imho.

I was wondering when this comparo was going to come up, because I reckon the ix35 spec is pretty good -- especially the top spec model.

Externally, it doesn't do it for me, but the mechanical and equipment spec including switchable AWD offers real value for money.

Hyundai has been progressively improving the quality and durability of their cars and (despite the VAG brand blinkering I'll admit to) is starting to equal the other Asian derivatives and pose a real threat to the Euros ... 5yr warranty not to be sniffed at.

Problem should not be the spec or the price .... though I'd never consider it if it was the same price as Transporter said.

Problem for me is the drive .... the 1 has an enjoyable driving experience and the other does not ....

5 years warranty is sweet, but I wonder why they offer only 12 months roadside assistance? And not 3 years like VW does.

test drives

I have driven both cars twice now,

believe it or not they feel very similar to drive, the IX35 has the modern factor, but the tig has the quality feel.

Now the sales experience was way drfferent - with the ix35, we where left in a HOT shed like office, could only have the ix35 for 1/2 an hour and felt rushed and pressured, on the other hand the Tig was - would you like a coffie while we get the car ready, and i was shown the features very well, take as long as you need!
As i said earlier i am leaning toward the Tig - as when i drove it it felt that little bit special!

BUT it will eventually come down to pick and features.
