It's the same unit being produced from the same manufacturers in China wth the same bugs and problems. Ask the guys on the golfmkv forums what they think as many of them have lost their money on buying units that don't work and some even paid to send them back so they're out of pocket even more.

You get what you pay for so if you're happy to have to spend many many hours hacking the windows ce operating system, downloading different versions of sat nav software from hacking sites, modifying the radio side, making changes to the cars wiring, having battery drain issues and all sorts of other problems than $619 seems like a bargain.

I would contact Auspack and see what they can do for you. Then if you do have a problem you are dealing local with a reputable operator.

As for all the many hours and hours of hacking, that is because those guys have wanted to do that, and because you are able to do it with those units - not because they had to do it to make them work (the only exception being the new harness for the 9000-1 that now fixes the battery drain issue). Seems that some of them have also stuffed them up because they have played around with them instead of leaving them as supplied.

I see 500+ pages on golfmkv that says otherwise. The units are plagued with problems and often require extensive modifications to make usable.

Quite right Maverick, however, that's 500 pages of generally the same group of people hacking them around - not 5000 individual people (assuming 10 posts per page) all reporting problems. But that's another reason if you where considering buying one of these units, to buy it through someone local that will support you should you have any problems. I would definitely not buy one of these units from an OS seller thru fleabay or similar.

Buy an RNS-510 instead, they work and are made for Tiguans.

yeh but what happens when it stuffs up and you need support? And they do stuff up. You then have to send it back to Vilnius or Blackpool or wherever. Even if they are reputable, the time, hassel and freight costs would not be worth it IMHO.

If I was to buy an RNS510 it would have to be through someone like Hardings in Bris.

RNS510 is a superb unit, and whilst not cheap, is worth the money.

I bought from Harding and it was installed by Volkspower. First unit had some issues, and they simply replaced it. Good people to deal with, and they've just done my bluetooth as well.

The failure rate of the RNS 510 is many many many times lower than the failure rate of the waywell units which do cost a substantial amount of money to return to China and you have to pay return shipping which you don't have to do with the regular sellers of the RSN 510.

Parts are available for the RNS 510 as well if required. So really a pointless argument as there are rarely problems, the unit is exceptionally well built and has undergone a lot of testing. The waywell return rate would easily be 50% with the latest batch taken into account.

But you have to weigh up the pros and cons of purchase from Europe, for many people the saving means you can almost buy another one as a spare.

One of the bigger sellers Tommy even repaired a RNS 510 that an Australian customer blew up at no cost, all he had to do was send it back to him and he picked up the return courier (which is unlike the waywell guys who expect you to pay both ways and are happy to send back a faulty unit for a warranty claim).

Which is why I wouldn't buy ANY from OS.

Last I heard from the official supplier of aftermarket RNS510s in Australia was that Interpol was after Tommy .... .... as all the ones on Ebay from Lithuania are stolen and police across the world are in the process of clamping down on the sale and distribution of these stolen RNS510s.

VWA has been told to report any RNS510 it finds with a stolen code as Interpol has circulated the codes for all the known stolen RNS510s around the world.

So be very aware of buying a RNS510 off ebay or the internet. If you really want 1 get one from the official supplier or VW themselves .... in Australia receiving and being in possession of stolen goods is a crime and you can be convicted if a stolen RNS510 is found in your possession. And ignorance to its origins is no excuse either.... so be warned.

How very naive of you .... .... the police is required to charge you for any offence and this is not classified as a minor offence either. It is irrelevant how much you paid for it.

Whether VW will do anything is up to them, but I can assure you if the police catch you with a stolen 1, that they will arrest and charge you.

Under S433 of the Criminal Code (QLD) the maximum penalty is 7 years imprisonment ...... ..... and the value of the stolen item is irrelevant (can be $1 or $1million, or more).

EDIT: and similar provisions apply in all states and territories in Australia.
