Part of the problem may be that it’s the start of the month and the dealer may not be quite as desperate for a sale as a few days ago.

You’ll often get good deals towards the end of the month when dealers are looking to achieve sales budgets. Timing can be everything.

I'd aim for 10% off RRP.

Dealer delivery of $2,500-$3,000 is just dealer "tax". It doesn't cost them anywhere near this much to prepare a vehicle for delivery - more like $400-500 if they send it out to a pre-delivery detailer. The extra $2,000-$2,500 is just a cash grab.

        • I agree with Tigger, min 10% off for any brand new cars you purchased.

          • In respect of the Wolfsburg. I just put a deposit in Canberra for MY19 Wolfsburg, Sunroof & 5 year warranty, drive away for a few dollars over $64,000 with Jan delivery.

I was told there was only 1 slot left for getting a sunroof model.

Should I be using the cooling off period to find a better deal?

I think it wouldn’t hurt to shop around to compare. It might also be cheaper to buy in NSW and get it registered in ACT?

Agree with this - have only heard stories of rip offs from ACT dealers and my own experience was no different. I bought my 162 through a broker from a dealer in NSW who trailered it down and registered in ACT for me..

In your opinion, what's the best strategy here if buying out of state? Ask for a price excluding rego/stamp duty and pay that myself in my home state?

Nice! That’s a good point with the brokers as they deliver and register nation wide

                    • Thanks guys! This thread has helped me heaps.

Just got off phone with Rockdale VW, and locked in a much better deal that partner and I are 110% happy with. In ball park of $7k cheaper than ACT. I'm still within cooling off period for my local ACT dealer, so will pull out of that deal once I have a signed sale contract that we're sorting out right now.

That’s awesome! Rockdale is doing a lot of sales lately....[emoji3]

Typically dealers will either put it on a temporary permit for you to drive back or deliver it to you in your home state with registration. Depends on the dealer.

                          • Still waiting on the Sale of Contract from Rockdale.

However, this post here is making me nervous: End of financial year car sales : canberra - it says that cooling of period is only valid if financing. That may be true for NSW, but I don't think that's true for ACT/Canberra.

As I understand it, in the ACT you are subject to a 3 day cooling off period under Section 25B. I've also read https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/2274/~/purchasing-advice#!tabs-2 and my Sales contract, obviously, we also confirmed verbally with dealer that there is a 3 day cooling period.

I can't find any reference either on Access Canberra or the ACT itself that the cooling off period is subject to finance only. As I understand it in NSW the cooling of period only applies if finance is arranged. But this doesn't appear true in ACT.

Can someone put me to ease, is the new car cooling off period (I haven't taken delivery of the car, nor signed any delivery/waiver) applicable here if I want to pull out of the sale in ACT regardless of financing?

                            Link to Section 25b:

                                Thanks in advance
A decent price for standard wheelbase 132 would be around $43k. I was negotiating around that price with that same particular dealership back in June, but I believe MY19 price is $2k more than MY18.5. In the end I decided to go for the 162 Highline instead.
