This is quite interesting as the internals of the Mk7 R exhaust are quite a lot different:

So got my Golf R rear box fitted up, looks perfect, just as it should have been.

Went with no resonator and there is no drone but I don't really like the sound. It's hard to describe what I don't like about it.

I've got a controller coming for the valves and I'll get a tune in a couple of weeks so will live with it for a while to see if I can define my dislike.

That’s why you can get used golf r mufflers, the golf r boys don’t like it either.

Having carried both the Tiguan and Golf R muffler they're definitely a heavy weight. The Golf R is heavier, probably around 14-16kg, the Tiguan around 10-12kg.

Remember that the Golf R has the resonator in the rear section whereas the Tiguan has it in the front. So there's a second smaller muffler on the Golf R catback.

If you want to go light then a titanium exhaust is your answer.

Yes though there's probably a few other places to reduce weight first before looking at a titanium exhaust.

I think they may have titanium tips. I don't think the whole thing is titanium but don't quote me on it.

They make exhausts in everything from el cheapo mild steel up to hand rolled titanium and probably even more advanced materials in 2020.

I'm not sure on the VW models, but I imagine the Tig R one is Ti based on it retailing at something like 4,000 euros.

No chance. Tig one is made out of a low grade stainless steel so it doesn't rust but definitely not Ti. These are built to a price and nobody is going to want to pay for an expensive exhaust system on a family SUV. You really only see that sort of thing in higher end exotics.

Probably right, but that cost is crazy for stainless. It must be because it is vw factory / part number.

A member posted this today on the golf R group, of their 2 year old akra from the SE pack. This one is Titanium.

Yes the Golf R Special Edition has the full Akrapovic exhaust and it's an expensive ($5,500) option. It's 7kg lighter than the stock exhaust system too. I think you can special order it from VW but you're looking at ~$6,700.
