Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Is there anyone in Brisbane willing to do VCDS tweaks for me? Of course willing to pay for your time and use of equipment. I'm wanting to turn off stop start, have recirculating aircon on as standard, and disable the safety prompts when you first start the car, and any others you might recommend?
    cheers

Having had a Powermagic for a couple of years, I decided to go with a seperate battery after the Powermagic decided not to shut off the power when it should have resulting in a flat car battery. It happened a couple of times. I've had to replace the car battery as a result. Luckily the car is still under a fully maintained lease.

I'm also in Brisbane and would be keen to know if there are any members here that would be able to help with the VCDS tweaks, once our car arrives.

You can get the DR650-2CH with a 64G card here for just over $500 after the discount with your email address. https://www.linelink.com.au/collecti...r650s-2ch-64gb

The Powermagic is about $30-40. So less than $600 for your setup.

The first time I fitted my camera took me about an hour.

          It was VERY easy.

I don't think paying the dealer $400 for an hours work is good value personally. And I'll bet I took a great deal more care and time fitting it than they would have.
You misread my post IsDon and have my warranty concern arse about, what I do want is the dealer to supply and fit the dashcam so it becomes part of the vehicle so then if it or the install has problems then they have to warrant it, yes it does cost more but it also gives me piece of mind.

            Ok. I misunderstood.

But I think you also have a misunderstanding of what warranty you're going to get.

Your car has a three year warranty.

Your dashcam has a twelve month warranty.

Just because your dealer fitted the dashcam does not mean you magically bought yourself a three year warranty for your dashcam.

You have, I believe, a twelve month warranty on the work performed by the dealer on your behalf (like stuff ups in servicing). So if he stuffed up the install somehow his work is warranted for a year. There is also a twelve month warranty on the camera. As the retailer, in your case, is the dealer then it is the dealer who is the retailer who is legally responsible for your warranty claim, I grant you that. But you would also have exactly the same rights to a warranty if you bought the dashcam elsewhere and fitted it yourself.

So, can you explain to me again what sort of additional warranty your $400 has secured?

I submit to you that you are actually far more likely to get a successful claim for warranty on a malfunctioning dashcam through a retailer that isn't VW.

It all ties in with consumer guarantees as per Australian law. You ever had a warranty claim for a mobile phone that is outside its warranty but still under contract? It's considered within the acceptable life of the product and they have to help you. I'm surprised the amount of times people give up or dont understand there rights as consumers when it comes to products that break or arent fit for service.

                Hi IsDon
Just paid $280 for the Cellink B from Linelink. Got $15 off for signing up for their spam emails. [emoji33]
                Free shipping is good.

                Thanks again IsDon.

                  Yes. That's true.

Exactly the same as the warranty rights you have under Australian consumer law for any product you buy. So if you purchased the product yourself, and fitted it yourself, you would be entitled to exactly the same rights to warranty outside of the stated period.

Having it fitted by dealer does not, in any way, give you any better protection. If that's what the dealer told you then he has sold you a $400 pup.

Now here's an example. I recently had a failure of the RTC battery of my dashcam.

I've had it for three years of faultless service up until now.

The RTC battery is an internal battery in the dashcam that powers the camera after the main power fails. Not for recording, mainly for time keeping etc. The only way I knew this was a problem was that the camera was losing time after the main power is disconnected. Otherwise it worked perfectly.

Now this is way outside the 12 month warranty, but three years is pretty good for any consumer electronic device. I contacted Autoblackbox in Perth, the national Blackvue distributor. I had the option of sending my own camera to Korea to be repaired, or I could be given a reconditioned exchange. As explained to me, I send them my camera, they send it off to Korea for complete refurbishment and checking, they keep a pool of refurbished spares which they provide to me for $90 immediately. That's posted back to me, overnight. The refurbished camera has a 3 month warranty.

I don't know about you, but I reckon that's pretty bloody good customer service. That's for a camera I bought, and installed myself. I didn't even buy it directly from Autoblackbox to begin with.

So given this scenario, in three years time, on a camera that a VW dealer has installed for you. Do you honestly think VW, with its borderline at best customer service, is going to provide you with a better outcome?

Absolutely correct, I'm choosing to have the dealer do it rather than sourcing it myself and then fitting it. Much prefer to tie it all up together and get them to handle it, easier for me if there are any issues.

Well done mate. You won't be disappointed.

May I please say now that I'm not in any way associated with Autoblackbox or Linelink. Just a satisfied customer of both companies.

Now, my most recent dealing with Linelink. When I purchased my second Blackvue for the wife's new Tig, I bought, at the same time two Cellink-B batteries. One for the new camera, and one for the old camera in my Audi to replace the faulty Powermagic. I contacted them, once I put the items in my cart on the website and on their online chat function asked if I could get a further discount as I was spending $1100 in one hit. No problems, code provided and additional discount appeared instantly in my cart prior to checkout.

Last week, I realised I hadn't thought of the front and rear polarising filters. The two came to $98. Below the $100 to get the standard discount. Another chat, "remember me, a returning customer" their reply, "no worries", another code and $12 off.

                      These guys rock!

If their after sales support is even a fraction of their sales support I should have no issues with future warranties.

Now VW could learn a thing from these guys.

Based on IsDon's experience my money is with self installation.

We just have to accept a time and convenience penalty.

But in general I am happier with the outcome.

                        My 2 cents.

My OBD11 adapter arrived the other day and finally got a chance to have a little play. I have disabled the Stop/Start system just using the voltage method at this stage (might try the other way as well so I don't get the crossed out A symbol in the dash).

Also found that you can make some changes to the AID display. I have changed the Depiction to Option 3 which has changed the colouring to orange instead of blue (sorry not the best photos):

One cool thing with this display is the orange dots in the centre dance around when you switch display screen. Will see if I can take a video and upload.

There in another depiction option that changed the speedo and rev counter layout, will try switching to that and take some more photos. There was a forth option but couldn't tell any difference to that and the default option 1.

The next thing I want to try is getting the Traffic Info and Traffic Speed Sign recognition turned on but not sure if they will work here in NZ or not.
