For when you need an extra hand… or foot.

One small but significant addition to the Tiguan (and part of the optional Luxury package for Comfortline) is the automatically operated tailgate, which allows for fuss-free opening and closing of the rear door. With the Easy Open function, the tailgate can be opened simply by waving a foot in front of a sensor, making it enormously convenient when carrying a load of shopping. Closing the tailgate is as easy as pressing a button or allowing the Easy Close function to shut the tailgate automatically when the user moves away from the vehicle. Perfect for when you’ve got your hands full.‴

Yep, I remember reading that in the brochure as well, and telling my wife who is really excited about it (I did mention to her that it's probably not 100% reliable). If my highline doesn't come with it I'll be seeking some sort of compensation from VW They have clearly advertised the feature in the brochure.

Yeah will keep you posted when we get ours this month. Already disappointed about the tow bar but still getting it, just don't want further let downs. Even the HUD in euro models, the review says they dont match the rest of the car, but still if its an availability i want it ha ha. I guess we do alot more towing in AUS compared to EUR so i can understand the reasoning behind not allowing the electric tow bar.

For everybody getting upset about the foot control for the boot,
Dont, my inlaws just brought a brand new Skoda superb and it has the feature, it's bloody useless and hardly ever works. Have not come across a car with that feature that consistently work without fuss.

Went to the dealers yesterday and they said there has been an issue with the switch for the foot activated tailgate which means that a lot of cars got shipped with faulty switches (and why a lot of the sales guys are having troubles demonstrating the function).

Cars that are effected are having new switches fitted locally prior to delivery.

I did take a 132TSI for a quick drive and in comparison to my wife's 155TSI:

• less body roll
• more laggy accelerator - especially in D
• more wind noise around the side mirrors
• a little more spacious (but not a lot)
• less power and overtaking ability
• DAP with ACC and electronic dials is great
• generally more edgy/angular interior /exterior

I'm looking to change work cars in the next 6-12 months, but I'd need a pretty good deal on one of these to make it stack up.

My folks have a Ford Kuga and use the foot control all of the time. I found it pretty handy the other day when I was walking towards their car with a slab of beer and was able to open the tailgate with ease. It made me realise that it's something I'd actually use if it works reliably on the Tiguan.

Funny, for me it felt like it has a bit more body roll than the 155tsi I drove a few months earlier. Agree with the acceleration lag, I'm hoping the 162TSI will be a lot more spritely.

I might add that on the boot door there is a switch for close and another one which has an "A" I assume this is for Auto close but I tried doing it about 10 times and not once did it work. So I agree it's most probably a feature but faulty one for that. I also noticed that the rear exhaust on the TDI R line are not the trapezium ones. It was just the twin left side exhausts.

This is advertised on the R Line brochure so is VW getting themselves in a rut?

I believe the brochure stated something along the lines that the 162TSI will have the 'left and right' exhaust. It didn't mention the TDI. So maybe they are in the clear... lol

Having contacted our dealer (as we have the Comfortline with Luxury Pack) they advised it is not a feature being brought into Australia. I'm annoyed as their own advertising states its a 'significant' feature. Whether it's good or not or works as described. The ones in the Ford Kuga I've found to be reliable and useful and work 90% of the time first time. I've email VW H/O as i'd like confirmation as if its not coming to Australia, thats pretty terrible marketing and as someone else said, would expect compensation.

The automatic close works (the second button on the boot) you need to walk away with the keys more than 1.5m and wait about 10 seconds and it auto closes. Good for at home in the driveway. Not sure i'd use it at a shopping center.

They must be doing something wrong. I have a superb and it works very well and quite a handy feature. Didn't think I would use it much but probably one of the most used features for me most days. Need to have the key in your pocket or on your person and kick once....then open after approx 1-2 seconds. If they kick again then it cancels and won't open.

I've got the 132 tsi comfortline with both option packs, and the easy boot opening works well & consistently, even my kid can do it

Initially, I had trouble as I was randomly waving my foot side to side, and it would only activate randomly. However on closer reading of the manual (which is not exactly the best written I might add), it stated to basically use a kicking motion ie. forward & backwards under the mid part of the bumper. Once I used this method, it works like a dream.

As for closing, if you use the auto closing button (right hand one), it will start beeping and wait for you to move a certain distance away from the car, before closing.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Kacak. You've confirmed that we do in fact get this feature, and that if you know how to do it properly (forwards and backwards as opposed to side to side) then it should work OK. I'm glad - this is a feature that I'm looking forward to.

p.s. thanks for staying active on the forum. A lot of people don't bother once they've got their car

Did you have the key with you, when trying the easy opening boot feature?

Try reading pg 107 of the manual again, in conjunction with Fig 84.

Also check that the feature is enabled in the Car Settings of the Infotainment system?

Not trying to be smart**** just trying to ensure you've covered all bases

Like I said earlier contact your dealer as there were a bunch of cars shipped with faulty switches. These were meant to get changed out before delivery, however it looks like a few have slipped through (including possibly dealer demos).
