May I ask where you heard it was the same engine as the gti? From the reviews I have read and what I have heard from my brother in law and other dealers is that its the same power output as the golf but a similar engine

Although not updated on Wikipedia the Tiguan 162TSI is using the new EA888 engine (valveshifts variant)- the same one in the Golf GTI, PP and R and other VAG group brands, like Audi A4. But from model to model there can be unqiue tunes to match the market needs of the car (eg. subtle performance/economy for A4 saloon, to Sporty/Racy for GTI or R) and mechannical differences like exhaust systems, air intakes, etc etc will also impact on engine performance as well.

So with the news that my little family is about to go from 2 to 3, I'll probably be selling my GTI and terminating the lease. I need a bigger car. I always had my eye on the new Tiguan, but the Mrs is a Mazda CX-5 enthusiast

My head however has me leaning towards the CX-5 because previous maths had deduced that the new Tiguan was far too expensive for what it is. That said, with the confirmation that my GTI won't be mine for too many more months, I did some more looking and a little bit has changed. I would be leasing the CX-5/Tiguan, and compared the following:

• MY17 Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline with Luxury Pack in Indium Grey
• MY15 CX-5 GT 2.5 with Leather in Meteor Grey

I should note the CX-5 now comes standard with Mazda's safety pack, which is an add-on I would not be getting on the Tig.

The price difference in my pocket each fortnight is ~$70 in favor of the Mazda, which is about right given the RRP difference between the two of ~$4k. The Tig will save me $50 per fortnight over my GTI, although the GTI lease was for 3 years where as the Tiguan or CX-5 lease would be for 5 years.

I'd prefer the Tiguan. I want to stick with VW if I can for a start. It's bigger and has a larger, more flexible interior. The engine is much better and I think it looks a lot nicer/classier. If my enthusiast itch isn't scratched near term, then the Tig is a good candidate for future shenanigans. If aftermarket parts for the GTI (or any VW really) are anything to go by, then the Tiguan should have plenty of options available at some point (looking at you LED headlights). The Mrs seems to like the Tiguan looks as well so she may be coming around finally.

I know this is the wrong place to ask for an impartial assessment lol. I'm still on the fence because I watched this review last night and am a bit miffed how the brand spanking new Tiguan is still not considered absolute best in class, especially seen as the apparent winner was the 2 year (by comparison) CX-5 - and that was the Maxx sport, not the GT I am considering. Yeah it's one review, but the consensus seems mixed across the board.

Not wanting to state the b****y obvious - but you need to test drive them both, preferably in the same day. The CX-5 is cheaper to buy, cheaper to service, cheaper to run but to me I didn't like driving it. Hated the gearbox and a newer model is supposedly meant to be around the corner.

100% with you on that. Just have to find a time the wife and I are both available. Thankfully there are dealers close to where we live for both manufacturers.

Just use the Mazda price as a bargaining tool to get the VW price down as much as you can (if you don't get corporate pricing).

The main comments on most of the reviews on the Tiguan relates to its higher price and cost of luxury/driver assistance packages. For the cost of the Comfortline with both packs I'd be inclined to wait/order the 162TSI Highline, but that's personal preference and timing requirements for having the new car aside.

CX-5 is not a bad car and would be easy to sell second-hand when you go to trade. You'd expect the Tiguan to get bigger wraps on it given that it is a brand new car going up against one that has been out a few years and about to go through a mid-life update.

It's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out in sales in the next 12-24 months.

Judging from the styling of the new CX-9 and the CX-3, the new CX-5 will look very sharp. Considering that the current CX-5 compares well to the brand new Tiguan, VW are going to find it tough when the new model is released. This is why I think VW shoot themselves in the foot when they make the base and mid models very bland. I mentioned the LED vs Halogen lights before (for which there is a decent cost difference, so fair enough) but they literally de-style the lower models to make them look more boring, like featuring less chrome in the grills. Yes, they want to persuade customers to purchase the more premium models, but IMO, the models below the highline already look out-dated. A lot of people are influenced by style and looks when they buy cars.

We bought a new cx5 in 2015 and it was the new facelift at the time. We aren't a real fan of it. Wouldn't buy it again. We will keep it for a couple of more years since we own it outright, the mrs drives it so who cares lol. We ordered a new 162tsi r-line for my car though and the ones we looked at were so much nicer than the cx5, and they weren't even highline.

I was really looking forward to the facelift CX-5 that you got - I went and drove one the first weekend that the dealer had them and was really disappointed. I have had two Jetta's and I was ready to jump ship for change sake but I started to realise what I like about VWs after driving the CX-5. Still, I saw a new CX-9 the other day and it looks so nice.

The cx9 is nice but that tiny little engine should be in an mx5 not a cx9 lol. Car manufacturers these days seem to have forgotten the old saying " there's no replacement for displacement". Give me a Tiguan v8 any day over the bottle of milk they offer lol

I'm just interested to see what happens in the next 18 months as that's around when I'll be looking to upgrade or maybe by MY19 if I can hold out. I'm hoping that VW start offering the R-line on the Comfortline trim and/or include some of the key options to bring it up to spec with some of the competition in the segment (without having to purchase option packs).

With the likes of Mazda doing mid-life upgrades, VW are going to want to keep up with the leaders in the segment if they want to take a decent piece of the mid-size SUV market. Especially if they expect the 132TSI Comfortline to pull a large number of sales it needs to be the all-round package.

The 132 comfortline with luxury pack is what I am looking at right now. Had a sit in one this afternoon (stand trim though, no luxury pack). Plenty of room and I felt right at home. I'm not fussed on any of the features I'll be missing out on for not going to the 162...other than the LED headlights. What chance will there be that I could retro fit them? You can easily buy the Golf R headlamps for any Mk7 Golf, but that's a model that has a much bigger following. It's also very early days for the 2nd gen Tiguan.
