  • High pitch whistling sound

    Hi
Seeking some assistance with a really annoying high pitched whistling sound I am experiencing with my Tiguan mk2 2017 162tsi. It seems to occur most times whilst driving at lower speeds in particular. I took it to the dealer and they “couldn’t” replicate the problem.

Link to video with sound: - YouTube

I can’t isolate the sound very hard to pin point but could be water pump or pcv valve.

    Thanks

Only squealing I could hear is slippage of tyres when cornering too fast in a carpark

I can hear something although there is a lot of echoing/other sounds in the video. Assuming you have checked if its just a worn accessory belt that is making the noise?

Otherwise it could possibly be a failed PCV - when the PCV fails it causes a high pitched whistling sound.

Does it increase if you rev the engine? Is the engine misfiring or rouning rough at all? Because this is usually one of the symptoms if a PCV has failed.

This is the part I am talking about. If you remove your plastic engine cover then its right on top of the valve cover on the right hand side of the engine. 06K103495BM - (PCV) Oil Separator - EA888.3 MQB/MLB - 1.8 TSI & 2.0 TSI - Volkswagen & Audi– VAGPARTS Australia

Agree with Lucas, that does sound like the accessory belt. When was it last changed?

Thanks for your suggestions. I’m assuming the accessory belt is the drive belt? That has never been replaced so it could be that for sure.

The accessory belt is visible if you pop the bonnet and look on the drivers side of the engine. It runs your alternator and air conditioning compessor etc. If this belt (or any of the pulleys or tensioners that keep it rotating smoothly) are worn then it can cause a sound similar to what is in your video. The belt itself can be replaced for $50 if thats the issue.

Your engine uses a timing chain to keep all the engines timing components in sync. This timing chain technically never needs changing, but on the odd occasion here and there these will stretch or snap and require replacing.

Thank you. I got a quote from VW $180 to replace the belt. Seems a bit high… the $50 you mention is that just for the part or including labour

My $50 comment was buying a replacement belt and fitting it yourself.

If you don’t have the means to do it yourself then $180 isn’t too bad considering its dealership pricing. It’s a 5 minute job.

I replaced the belt unfortunately the noise is still there but didn’t start until 20mins into my drive. Very strange!

It could also be the accessory belt tensioner. Assuming the engine makes this noise when its idling, pop the bonnet while the engine is running and see if you can hear if its coming from the tensioner?

I had a high pitched whistling sound on my passat alltrack. Turned out it was the driver side mirror which i had done minor damage to at one point. When i reached a certain point it made a whistling noise which i could not pinpoint. The dealer worked it out and put a small piece of tape on the join between uppper and lower halves or the mirror and it was "fixed". Replacing a mirror is very expensive so i never got it fixed properly. Although i have replaced the tape once or twice since. Not saying that is your problem but might be worth a look or listen.

I've got a very similar noise. Its intermittent but can sometimes be heard if I dab the throttle in Park and sometimes while driving under certain conditions e.g. under heavier load like accelerating up an incline or engine braking from higher revs like in Sport mode as it holds the gear. Mechanic looked at it yesterday and initially thought it may be the turbo but doesn't appear to be, thankfully. Need to go back in a few days again so will see if he can inspect the tensioner and reply. Any further luck of your end?

Still battling with this problem so posting 2 vids in case anyone has had/seen something similar.
Regular mechanic had a quick look at the turbo (just hoses for leaking etc) and didn't think its that. He replaced the accessory belt but still ongoing.
VW had an initial look but want 3hrs (at $220/hr!) just to diagnose - their early thoughts are:
                            - rattle noise coming from either the turbo or the center exhaust muffler when the car is hot. need more time to diagnose, remove exhaust from turbo for inspection of turbine wheel and wastegate will need all day rebook require car night before as needs to be cold

                            Second video:

Finally got to the bottom of this one for my instance (which sounds exactly like yours). The noise is coming from one of the exhaust boxes (as the tech put it) located pretty much under the drivers seat as he indicated. He believes that a spot weld failure internally is the most likely cause and once the exhaust heats up the metal vibrates causing the sound. Unfortunately, VW doesn't sell that component as a stand alone part, so would have to buy the whole exhaust. An alternative is to buy a used exhaust from a wrecker. However he did give it a few taps with the hammer and it actually seems to have disappeared for me (and it was pretty bad in my case), so hoping I don't have to do anything further. Hope this helps.
