Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Knocking sound, help please

    Hi all,

Started getting this snapping sound coming from the Tig. After it first happened, it happened a few times until I got home (3 minute drive). Then I took it out for a drive to check and it happened quite frequently when both turning and going straight. Sounds like something getting into tension and the suddenly releasing. When it first happened, it made quite a large knock sound. I recorded the audio when I took it for a check, it happened a quite a few times, but can be clearly heard at 00:40, 01:54, 02:02, happens more towards the end as well but its the same sound as the earlier ones.

    SndUp | Post info

Want to get some ideas before taking it to a mechanic.

    Thanks in advance.

I think you have a broken spring, just going off the noise; hit any big potholes lately?

This sounds pretty close to your video?

Does it do it more while steering, could be the strut mount too?

Thanks MIG. The video does sound exactly like what I've got.

I did hit a pot hole one day ago, but nothing happened immediately and I did a bit of driving after that. Maybe that pothole did the inital damage and then failed after. When it first happened, it was only when turing left, but it has started happening on straights as well now.

For something like this, is it worth taking to the dealer or an independent? Mines a MY18, so out of warranty. In BNE.

Go indy if you can, the dealer is good for warranty but even then they would try and fob you off with anything suspension (They will blame you for the damage)
