I haven't ordered the other bits. I'll have to check what parts the new turbo comes with. I may just need the silicone intake elbow but not sure how much difference this is going to make.

And haven't done anything about re-routing any other lines. Will have to investigate this a little further....

Yeah I'm not going to be doing anything too stupid. I'll be keeping this one for 100,000+km so I need it to be making reliable power.

Yes if I can I'll get some mild over-run crackles in S and M only.

And I'm with you fast shifting > DSG farts. That's why you don't get much noise from supercars on gear changes as they are often shifting too quick.

In the link below you can see the coolant line in the OEM position and sits in the front of the stock air box, with R600 installed it sits ontop of the R600 cover (5th pic in the link):

VWR R600 Part 2 - Install and final thoughts - GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum

There are kits that reroute the coolant pipe, underneath the airbox, like the one below:

Spulen MQB Intake Coolant Hose Solution - SE-MK7CH - 5987

I nearly got one, but worked out for my purposes the stock box is well engineered and with additional intake mods, flows well for up to 400 HP. For over 400 HP the R600 would be a sensible investment

Thanks for that. I'll do some more study before getting the installation done.

I was hoping I'd be able to get away with the stock airbox just with a high flow panel filter and some modifications, however I don't think it's got enough flow for stage 3.

Similar with the intercooler. You can probably get away with it on stage 2 or with an is38 but by the time you're heading to stage 3 the stock intercooler just doesn't cut it.

          • TCU TUNE UPDATE

So I got a bit itchy knowing I had the TCU software file ready on the laptop and snuck to the garage to do the TCU software install.

Connected the battery charger/maintainer and hooked the laptop up to the power, powered on the car (not started), put in the OBD personal flasher and I selected the TCU type and the MOD file. Note, the DQ500MQB BOSCH shares the same circuit board as the TEMIC DQ380.

With a slight hesitation I pressed the “install” button and some lights flashed up on the dashboard and some beeps could be heard. The installation bar came up and said 4 minutes and I saw that the file was being written.......my heart raced then before I knew it another prompt flashed “installation complete.”

I powered off the car, disconnected the laptop and charger and was ready to go. Strapping on the Vbox, I thought “what the heck” let’s go for a run. It’s dry and reasonably cool at 18 degrees c...

Straight away you can feel the clutch grip firmer and stay longer in gears in D. I went to my usual spot, my heart pulpitating like I’ve ran a marathon and waited for my car to reach operating temperature.

Ensuring it was safe, ESC off/sport engaged, gears in S mode....I enabled launch control. “4000 RPM” dialed in - it sounded like a rally car. Releasing the brake and flooring it I was thrown back in my seat.....definitely a more forceful launch. The front wheels spun like a GTI with race gas momentarily then gripped....the gears raced by and changed with medical pin point precision.

I pulled over and looked at the vbox....

            0-100km/h 4.1s

I had beaten my pre-TCU tune run of 4.2s. TVS engineering, a bloody good tune. I’ll do a full review once I’ve had to drive it for a couple of more kms in the burbs and on the freeway.

I’m sure with better tyres and less wheel spin I will be able to dip under 4s.

            What a night....

Time to eat my hungry jacks and head off for bed.

Nice work! It's quite significant what a decent DSG tune can make. You're not making any more power, you're just transferring it to the wheels in a more effective way.

              • TVS ENGINEERING TCU REVIEW PART 1

So one week into driving with the new TCU tune I thought to give an update, based on driving in D and having completed a launch with LC.

Driving in the burbs, low speed, short trips.
-Driving in D is now enjoyable and perfect, it’s like getting a new gear box. The shifts are smooth and holds the gears longer, and doesn’t continuously upshift to try to get you to 7th gear as quick as possible. When going from 1 to 2, it now holds the revs and enables you to have some available power. It did take me some adjustment, as previously I had to push harder on the accelerator to get moving, where as now I simply tap the accelerator and I feel instant power and the revs holding. It is smart enough to work out to shift to a higher gear when you’ve been gentle on the accelerator and steadily heading towards 3000rpm.

Spirited driving on the freeway, maintaining 100km/h and short bursts
                - My greatest surprise was when I floored it in D joining the freeway from the on ramp. Previously there was a delay and hesitation, before the gearbox dropped down a gear and the power came on. Now, when I floor it in D, there is no hesitation and the car responds immediately, almost like driving in S mode. So there really is the best of both worlds in D and the responsiveness is all regulated by your right foot.
-Gear shifts were pretty good before, but now it feels even more smooth, faster and precise.
-DSG farts have gone slightly quieter, which I expected as the gears are now shifting faster.

Launch control, when you need all battle stations on and the hand of God on your car
-I have increased the launch control RPM from 3500 to 4000. In this mode the car feels more race ready, like a rally car. In terms of take off, there is no hesitation and the boost comes on very strong. So much so that I am getting some GTI style wheel spin and it feels like I am being pulled by Thor’s hammer, before my tyres grip and I take off like I’ve pushed the nitrous button.
-The gears really change quickly in S mode and in a blink of an eye I’ve cracked 100km/h on the Vbox in 4.1s.

                Adjustments
I’ve had TVS make a adjustment to the tune, as I found on the initial tune there was a very slight “clunk” decelerating and downshifting from 2 to 1 gear. The second revision is now perfect, no clunks and certainly none of those stock mechanical DSG sounds.

                Stay tuned
I’ll write a separate review in a few weeks after I’ve had some time to drive in and experience S and M mode.

                • Sounds good - just like how a good DSG time should behave. And unfortunately how the gearbox should have come from the factory if the factory engineers weren’t trying to achieve a certain emissions target on an artificial test cycle.

You can purchase the re routed hose from APR. I’ve also had a look at the difference between the OEM turbo elbow compared to the APR elbow. It’s significant enough to definitely purchase, around $320 from memory.

                    • Does anyone know if the 18 model Tigs share the same gearbox as the 17/18 model R’s? I believe they are a vastly improved DSG and handle substantially more torque.

Hi Wolfsburger, FY18 Tigs have some of the strongest VW DSG gearboxes being the 7 speed wetclutch DQ500MQB BOSCH this is also used in the TTRS, RS3 and Skoda Kodiaq. The FY18 Rs run a smaller 7 speed wetclutch DQ381 with lower torque limits.

                        • There is a Tig in Russia that has installed a hybrid IS38 capable of running 600HP. The current numbers are 483HP and 600NM with just a downpipe and turbo change!

There are now quite a few hybrid IS38 Tiguans in Russia using both REVO and custom tuning. Exciting.

Anything north of 500hp is getting into "build your engine" territory. Also I suspect if they are running a stock intercooler this will be a limiting factor at these sorts of power levels.

Hey mate, thanks for the clarity. If they are running the same box as the RS3 I feel a whole lot better about my mods. My mate has an APR tuned RS3, the thing is stupidly quick and feels every bit as quick as my dads Turbo S. The only difference is the Turbo S will egg you on more and more, it will happily drive at the limit all day, every day. But the 120k RS3 with a few grands worth of mods, my god what a car. 11 sec and 3.2 0-100 on pump fuel with a flash tune and airbox. So impressive. Thank you for clarifying the box, have a great New Year. 👍

No probs, that’s what the community is here for. The Tiguan 162, is a very strong platform for modification. The stock engine is a Golf GTI EA888 Gen 3 and the gearbox is similar to an RS3, so with some bolt ons and tuning you can turn it into a bit of a sleeper. If you are planning on changing your turbo you should also consider doing a TCU tune also.

Turbo S is amazing, I drove the Carrera 4 and that thing was already fast enough, exhaust was intoxicating. Have a happy new year also!
