Is it a rattle or engine knock?

As these cars make so much torque at such low RPM, and with these so called flash tunes (most likely just add boost and raise limits to stop CELs and limp modes) you could be exceeding MBT at those load points.

Not sure if VAG ECUs log and actively display the knock channel but worth a look if you have the interface.

Perhaps try running a tank of BP Ultimate mixed with a bottle of octane booster to suppress knock. At least you can rule that out.

If the tune is rich enough, you could splash in 5L of E85 into your tank of BP Ultimate with octane booster to increase knock resistance - just to rule things out.

^ unfortunately the only way to fix that issue is an IS38 turbo

Doing a bit of previous work with vibration analysis on large hydro turbines, the noise is small pieces of metal vibrating. The actuator arm when you tap it makes a similar sound.

I can check the logs with Gordie tomorrow.

Lucas_R the wife was asking what the noise was, I said it was the turbo, could be an excuse to upgrade to IS38 or larger and tell her the noise will go away......

if you're upgrading might as well slap on a BW EFR lol...

Since you're in VIC, might be worth talking to Tao from Hypergear Turbos. He could potentially high flow your existing turbo into something better than the IS38 using ceramic ball bearings, and a billet compressor wheel.

I've bought multiple turbos from him, mild -> wild (however for JDM cars). Latest one I'm going to use is the ATR45SAT, should make a healthy 420~440kW at the wheels hehe

If the car is on a hoist tomorrow check for loose exhaust clamps and whether the heat shield could be rubbing the exhaust. The other thing I thought it could be is a broken pendulum mount, there are some instances where people who have installed the 034 dog bone mount have experienced broken OEM pendulum mounts.

Fingers crossed he finds it tomorrow.

Just had a rattle in engine bay from about 2500rpm fixed under warranty.
It was the fuel line and there was apparently a “kit” to resecure it.
Note my 162TSI is sadly stock.
              i hope this helps

Do you know how they exactly fixed it? I am worried about taking it back for a small fix as they will see the mods.

To be honest I didn’t look... and only a vague idea where to start looking. Last car I got my hands dirty on had a carburettor

The service bloke generalised about fitting grommets.
I’ll have a look in daylight and see if I can see evidence, but not sure what was there before to compare.
Feel free to PM me a pic of yours and a clue where to start looking if you have a suggestion. I’m in Sydney if you wanted to have a look but think you’re in Melb.

If its a fuel line grommet then I don't know where the fix could be either. Are you able to ring the dealer and as them what the did exactly. Say you know someone that may have the same problem.

I am also experiencing some low RPM / 1/4 throttle rattle. I've read that many Mk7 Golfs are having loose wastegates and actuators.

I found my rattle, it's the tip of the wastegate actuator rod and the wastegate arm. This morning when I started it, I quickly held it and there was no rattle. In my photo you can even see that the design allows for too much movement. Also before starting I tried wiggling the actuator arm and there is virtually no play. Just need to work out an easy fix, anything expensive fix will just push me into is38 swap.

Hi All, I was experiencing a similar rattle until I recently fitted my Turbo Blanket... This created a safe padding around the turbo & wastgate rod/arm and no more rattles! [emoji106]

I went for the Forge Motorsports Turbo Blanket (FMTUBL1) as this had good reviews and fits both IS20/38

Plus all the feedback I’ve read is positive - improves intake & engine temps, reduces lag, improves longevity and engine oil cools faster... It’s $100 well spent and a practical solution to the problem! ... Hope this helps! [emoji6]

Did you have a rattle all the time or at low acceleration?

Got a pic of the blanket installed?

Had a blanked on my Garrett GT35, all they really do is stop heat transfer to the engine bay. In this instance if it can stop the bloody rattle it will be a bonus.

Yes, I had a similar rattle, it was most obvious at low RPM 1200-1600(ish), or when the engine was slightly laboured in a high gear... Was only noticeable when I added the DP & Subframe Mount, so extra engine vibrations... But now the rattle seems to be gone, so that’s a bonus!

Will take a photo when I return home Sunday [emoji6]

... You could always fit a small metal spring (or similar) from the wastegate arm back to the firewall/engine, just needs to take the slack in the arm and test if this it the source of your rattle?

A few pics of the Turbo Blanket... The small spring over the top of the wastegate arm is actually what appears to have stopped the ‘rattling’... The spring is soft and doesn’t impede/restrict the movement of the arm and it’s designed for these temps too so it’s a safe solution if this is the source of your rattle!

Any questions let me know! Cheers
