  • Low Acceleration Rattle

After fixing the CTS dumpipe vibration issue can now hear a rattling issue in the dashboard or engine bay at low acceleration between 1500rpm and 300rpm in 4/5th gear. I removed sunglasses, phone and anything else loose to see if it was the problem but isn't.

Has anyone else got this issue?

After doing some research the following could be the problem:

Loose fuel line under drivers side, cable tie
Rattle at gap between headliner and windscreen, near red dots
    ODB1 port loose
    Rear vision mirror cap
Wastegate rattle. Waste gate actuator rod issue needing a new clip. Apparently MK7 should not have this problem and the clip will not fit.

I had an issue where the aftermarket dump pipe on my old Golf R (Mk6) was rattling on a heat shield directly underneath where the turbo was. It only happened when under load and you would not hear it when driving sedately. Might be worth double checking yours is not sitting very close to a heat shield.

I also had another rattle in my Golf R that took me months to track down yet ended up being such a simple thing - i literally pulled half the cars interior apart trying to find it.....i had a P3 gauge plugged into the OBD port and something inside the plug (a piece of solder perhaps) was rattling around at a certain RPM/vibration point....was so frustrating and i was so annoyed that i took so long to find it.

Thanks Lucas will check out the heat shield next week when the car is on the hoist, how did you fix the heat shield problem?

Hi Inasnt, do you have any sound clips?

I have some sounds also, but mainly on cold start up. When I’m in D and driving for a while, it does go away.

No sound clips, just sounds like something with a small clearance just touching under load at low acceleration.

            - Heat shield
            - Loose fuel line under drivers side
            - Fake sound/centre speaker
            - Sun glasses holder.
If you have a new DP, Id say its a heat shield, but if its been on a dyno, techs love to put everything to sport.
Go in to car setting and change Car sound to Eco (on custom), see if it goes away then.
            good luck!

Tiguan does not have the fake sound. No option for sound in car settings.

Funnily enough i got rid of the downpipe - it had several other poor fitment "features" i was not happy with in addition to the heat shield rattle. The replacement downpipe was a much better shape and didnt foul on the heat shield or the shifter cables etc.

If this does turn out to be the source of the sound in your situation, see if the exhaust shop can adjust where the hanger sits (the one at the back of the subframe that connects to the downpipe) to give you some more clearance.

Had the car on a hoist yesterday and checked everything related to the downpipe and the rattle. Plenty of clearance to the heatshield and all brackets tight. I had to trim the ends of the front hangers near the subframe when first installed the downpipe as the hangers were too long and were constantly hitting the subframe.

Dub Addition checked and came for a ride with me to try figure where the noise is coming from. Noise is only at 1500rpm in 4th to 7th, in low throttle, up shifts always put the car at 1500pm so can hear it. Off throttle at 1500rpm is no problem. Sound is like a thin piece of metal vibrating and is coming from the engine bay or at the front of the dash.

I have the 034 Motorsport dog bone insert installed which will not help with small vibrations... The search continues.

Is there a chance that the downpipe is defective and there is something lose within the flex joint or downpipe ?

Part of the work I do is inspecting newly manufactured components, vessels, NDT testing etc. I checked it thoroughly as I had it for a week before I installed it. The noise at 1500rpm is coming more from the front left of the dash away from the downpipe... I think the dog bone insert might be making something that usually does not vibrate now vibrate, but its only a 1500rpm on load. Arghhhhh

Why are rattles always at low rpm so you hear it all the time. If it was at 6000rpm you probably wouldnt care because you are so rarely doing those rpm.

Looking at some other golf forums and topics about rattles said to check windshield plastic in engine bay and abs lines in engine bay... no rattle.

Put my hand behind the turbo and onto the actuator arm and it rattles like crazy like the MK6 GTI YouTube videos..

Anyone else's rattling if you put their hand on their actuator arm and tap it??
