Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ali Express special... I will post up a link once I know they work OK.

They were cheap and the shipping was painfully slow - so slow I even forgot that I'd bought them!!!

            • Nice - do they now match the interior LED lighting and looks evenly lit at night?
I'm thinking about a set for a while - you may have inspired me

              • OK well that took a bit longer than anticipated....

I've got the passenger side fronts and backs in. The second side won't take so long as I know what I'm doing now!!!

Good news is that the Tiguan has a rear door controller module (Mk7 Golfs don't) so you can wire this into the door control module and enable using VCDS.

The bad thing is that the door housings have the cut-out for the wiring harness on the wrong side so there's some "modification" of the door required to fit the light housing and connector in.

Took me a bit longer than first anticipated but I'm happy with the results.

Driver side will definitely be a bit quicker as I know what I'm doing now

I'll post up a bit of a DIY for those that are interested in doing this mod. There's a few Mk7 Golf write-ups and I found one for Mk2 Tiguan on a Russian site which was very helpful for the rear doors: Door exit warning lights in Tiguan MK2 — DRIVE2

No just direct bolt on and drive. The ABS/stability control system still detects if there is slipping or locking of wheels.

Just pulls up a lot more efficiently now

                    • Hi Tigger, just checking in on your brake upgrades. You got the 6 pots put in the front, right? How is the feel now since they've had time to bed in?
Are the rears also going well? Did you get a larger backing plate fitted for them?

Thinking of doing the same with front and back, stock R/GTI PP calipers in rear, not sure about the front. Leaning towards RacingLine's Monoblock sets, but I don't want to loose the stock wheels so 5mm hub adapters will be needed, which means x4 if I want to keep all wheels lined up the same.

No problems with the 6 pot Alcons. I did need to go back once to get them bled a little more as the pedal was a bit spongey but after that they have been fine.

I just went with the standard rear R caliper and aftermarket rotors/pads, however if you're keen you can use this with a relocation bracket and install a bigger rear rotor. no larger backing plate. At the time I couldn't justify the extra $ for relocation bracket and bigger rotor and in reality I'd probably do the same again. I think the increase from the rear brakes would be marginal. It's more about looks.

                        • So not much of a difference when it comes to braking over the stock setup? Other than hitting the brakes harder would cause you to pull up quicker I mean.

For a laugh I called up my local VW Spares department. They want $526 each for the rear calipers.
I don't think I'll go larger than 310mm on the rear, but a nice set of rear rotors and pads that pair up nicely with a big set on the front would be nice.
I've also reached out to Brakes Direct to see what's out there these days.

Significant upgrade from stock for the fronts. Not so much for the rears but that was more a cosmetic upgrade than anything

Dealers charge like wounded bulls for brakes, pads/rotors. Not sure why but you're definitely best off going to Brakes Direct or others for some DBA rotors.

In terms of rear calipers I picked up a used set up for ~$250 from someone a parting out a Mk7 R. Cleaned them and painted before getting them installed.
