  • Electronic Steering Lock Failure - T-ROC Immobilised

Another service and another issue arises (2024 service was the air conditioning).

Put the 2020 T-ROC 140Tsi Sport in for it's 5 years service on 4th September and all went well and just asked that the DSG be checked as it had got itself into I don't know what gear I should be in (my fix when it happened was turn off the car and wait a couple of minutes then fire it up again and all good) ...... collected the car although 3 hours after requested & promised time.

The following morning went for a coffee and so shopping ..... unlock the car and when I go to start it = NOTHING ..... Message to move the Steering Wheel ...... hit start button & nothing. Call dealer workshop they put me onto VW Roadside Assist - a 1.5 hr wait (lucky it was only a 10 minute walk home & back) ..... checks battery and try to jump start = NOTHING still and finally confirms it has to be towed so I sort this with Roadside Assist - another hour. Let the dealership know when it's on the truck back to them. They confirm when it arrives to the surprise of the workshop crew who remembered it from day before.

Monday they run diagnostics and put files together to send to Sydney who advise it's the ...... gets confusing here as both the Electronic Steering Column Lock Module AND Steering Column Control Unit are mentioned. Anyway on 9th September they order 1 of the parts which will take 14 days from Germany ...... arrives @ dealer on 26th and they go to fit it so I can get the car back today 29th. Get an email from them "The WRONG part was ordered" and they have to order the correct one from Singapore = I expect this delay return of the car by a further 2 or 3 weeks (on top of the 3 weeks so far) based on a neighbors' experience with a part from Singapore.

Not sure if others have experienced this issue with the Electronic Steering Wheel Lock or Control Unit and would be interested if any one has.

Interesting that both the electronic steering wheel lock module and steering column control unit have been identified as faulty.
I am a member of a T-Roc forum (https://www.trocforums.co.uk/) and don't really recall much in conversation of these two items, little both being faulty together.

Count your lucky stars you don't have a Land Rover awaiting for parts just now, they have an IT issue affecting both production and parts which has seen a hold on obtaining anything for about a month now.
VW parts from Singapore are normally up to 5 days to dealers on the east coast.

      Thanks for your reply.

Don't think that both parts have failed ...... it's more a case of confusion between VGA and the dealer and what actually failed AND what part was ordered. The wrong one arrived and no one picked it up as incorrect until the tech went to fit it and so the other part had to be ordered.

Interesting you mentioned parts delivery time from Singapore ..... hope they've put an urgent on it.

At least I managed to get a hire car through VGA - took 2 weeks for them to organise @ a cost to them of $600.00 per week.

So the saga continues ...... after the last debacle of the incorrect part being ordered the "supposed" correct part/module was ordered and arrived @ Keystar yesterday ....... this is too ridiculous to comprehend as when the parcel was opened today it only contained a new set of bolts to secure the module but NO module. This has taken 2 weeks to arrive from Singapore. At the end of this week it is 6 weeks and

Has anyone got access to a VW T-ROC Replacement Parts Manual (ETKA is what I have for a 1976 T2 Transporter & T3 Transporter - it shows pictures and part number), as I'd really like to find the part numbers and description of the Electronic Steering Lock Module + New Bolts and also the Sterring Wheel Control Unit. I'd then arrange a meeting with Keystar to get a better understanding of what the diagnostics said and what part was required & then see what they ordered.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

ETKA still exists to this day for all modern VW/Audi's etc. You have to register and pay a small fee and then you can download all relevant documents for your car.

Thanks for that ..... did find etka somewhere but thought nah not paying so I'll do a face to face with VW Keystar and on Friday got the part number of 2Q0 905 861 A - Steering Immobiliser Module or in some "circles" Electronic Steering Lock Module. I'd found the no. with web searches and all seems to match up with fitting to the T-ROC, so that part confirmed. ETA after contacting VW Customer Care and them talking to Keystar is 23rd October so if all goes well I expect to get the car back on 28th.
So that will be 7.5 weeks to get it sorted.

Saga to this point in time with the replacement Steering Immobiliser Unit fitted and checked ...... had the T-ROC back for just over a week and doing as it should.

Have had to go to VW Roadside Assist as the 2 front 19" Suzuka Rims were damaged by the towie having to thread straps from inner point of rims through to outer and securing to make a central pulling point for the winch. Damage noticed @ collection on 23rd October so am waiting for Roadside to get answers as to whether any compensation of $$$ to get them repaired will be made.

Good to hear they got the main issue sorted with the steering immobiliser. Unfortunately machined wheels that are used on a lot of cars these days are easy to damage, and due to the fact they are machined (put on a lathe to cut that shiny section of the rim) they are quite expensive to have repaired to a 'like new' standard. Hopefully VW fix this in one way or another.....either $ compensation, some free services, replace the wheels or repair them (properly)

Thanks guys ..... yeah it's a bugger re the rims. Have followed up VW Roadside Assist as it's been 2 weeks since an incident report was lodged with them. Hopefully it'll be quicker than the 8 weeks for the immobiliser but I'm not holding my breath.

Must be jinxed as the battery died on Tuesday morning and it took 2 RACQ visits to tell me the obvious so a new AGM battery - this is the 3rd battery = they're lasting 2.5 years.
