Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Haven't had to use any spray yet. Managed to drive it out of limp mode twice just by, well, ignoring it. However, bought the $30 can of Pennrite DPF cleaning foam just for emergencies and shoved that and an open ended spanner (to remove that top exhaust temp sensor) all into one of the door pockets for emergency stop overs. The oven cleaner has to be applied at room temp.
With VGA running I see that the soot levels drop to ~10% after an active regen so haven't had to lay a spanner to it...yet. I just got a bit nervous after being laid up on an unsceduled stop in a country town when my car and trailer were booked on a ferry two days later.
So now I have my Amarok survival kit. DPF foam cleaner, 22mm spanner, VGA DPF and my trusted Autel 319 trouble code diagnostic/eraser that doesn't need a phone, internet, wifi, batteries or even a network adapter. Throw in a wallet and a toothbrush and call me McGyver!

Have you considered having your dpf umm fall off? And have a tune put on your car?

        i) not yet. It's a covid purchase that has only seen it's first service.
ii)tune? Not really. I'm getting 8.5L/100 klms with four people and gear. Doesn't need it.

wish i knew your secret.. mines (21 highline, V6) lucky to crack 9.5 on the highway, 10-11 around town. egr delete tune, catch can, 20 inch wheels with 265/50 AT rubber, otherwise std.. seems to always be doing DPF regens

Dunno the frequency of the regens. Only just got VGA up and running.

Should be about every 300-350km's on the V6 Amarok between DPF regens (assuming the previous regen was not interrupted part way though, in which case it will be less than 300-350km's).

Have you had the car checked out? Something seems off as its using a lot more diesel that it should be. My diesel SQ5 gets about 7L on the freeway and we average 9.5L around town with a stage 1 tune and I make sure I use the power the engine has regularly.

As mentioned in my previous post, the V6 Amarok's do a DPF regen about every 300-350km's so if you are doing them much more often than that then something is wrong. The overfuelling issue will be blocking your DPF up much more quickly than normal. See if you can get the car put back to the stock tune and see if the issue corrects itself because I think you will find that it will.

Not yet, might go see the guy who put the tune on it, but its probably not the issue. its a alientech tune, so they send the file to someone in brissy, he tweaks it, then sends back. i imagine, the low load cells arent even touched, its just the higher load cells that are tweaked to give the higher power output.

The wifes RR with th twin turbo Lion V6 221kw gets 7.6lt/100 around town and 5.8 on the highway..

TBH im restoring an old RS Turbo wagon. soon as i get it registered, ill be selling the rok. wifes got a range rover we can tow with now, so dont need the ute.

Currently looking at buying a 2022 Amarok V6 manual and I have a question about the DPF.

Has the DPF issue been rectified in the 2022 year model? Does anyone here on the forum have one for sale?

                    Thanks

The only way to fish the dpf issues is to delete it.

Can you delete the DPF? Anyone done this, and what was the outcome?

Go to the modrok fb page and you will find plenty of people that have.

Yes you can, but....you should know:

                            1) Its illegal because you have removed factory fitted emissions equipment from the vehicle.
                            2) Its quite possible that your insurance would be void due to the car technically being illegal/not roadworthy.
                            3) You need to spend $1000-1500 on top of the replacement exhaust pipe section to have the cars ECU tuned so that the car knows that it no longer has the DPF fitted, otherwise you will have lights and messages on the dash constantly and the car may go into a limp mode because it thinks something is wrong with the DPF.
                            4) The exhaust sound will be louder and you will blow black smoke out of the exhaust when driving.

In saying this, lots of the modified utes and 4wd's getting around have had their DPF removed. So lots of people do it, but it comes with some expense and also some risk.

Have look on facebook, it doesn’t cost as much as a replacement dpf when (and it will) it fails a well tuned diesel doesn’t need to smoke, chipped and poorly tuned vehicles smoke.

Hello. We bought a 2017 Ultimate new and had issues at 2500kms half way between Adelaide and Melbourne (loaded car and decent hwy speed). VW came out and said it needed to go on a long drive (I thought Melbourne to Adelaide was a long drive!?), and that it needed to be thrashed! The lights came on again at Nhill. This time it derated completely. VW Assist were useless, and had no way of getting the car and it's 5 occupants back to Adelaide. I ended up taking our truck and old ute to Nhill and collecting them myself! We sent a $2000 bill to VW and they paid it! Our local Barossa dealer was fantastic and said that it was a known problem and that a revised DPF was being sent to suit Australia. A few month's later and the new DPF in away we went. All was well until 60000kms (Car being used daily on a 1 hr commute from the Barossa to Adelaide and then back daily). The DPF light and glow plug light came on again and the car went into limp mode again, rendering my wife stranded again!Enough was enough. The problem had to go. With the DPF removed and the EGR blanked off, and the ECU given a mild tune (to increase torque and lessen the gearbox lag when leaving a junction or overtaking) at the same time it transformed the vehicle. The fuel economy went down from a long term average of 9lt/100km to 7.5lt/100km. The remap got rid of that frustrating and sometimes frightening gearbox lag when changing gears, and most importantly within two oil changes, the oil was starting to stay clean between services! The vehicle now has 130000kms on it and has not faulted since. The sump oil stays clean and has lost that carbon content that the EGR was throwing back into the engine, and the tailpipe is still surprisingly clean. It emits no black smoke (which is something I stipulated when it was being remapped).

So to round up, the fuel consumption has gone down (better for the environment and our pockets), the lifespan of the engine has gone up (also better for the environment and our pockets as it's not being thrown away or needing work at 200000kms). They are an awesome ute made unreliable with emissions systems that ultimately make the vehicle unreliable, consume more fuel, and shorten the engine's lifespan. Do I think the risk is worth it? Yes, because we bought a new vehicle that needs to be reliable, especially when out on remote touring. It is now a reliable & trusted vehicle. Just a pity we had to take that risk!
