Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I've downloaded the new maps but I'm unable to update.

Probably because I have a retrofitted MIB1 unit, I always have to update through the SWDL menu and have done this one before earlier this year.

However this time, the headunit detects the new maps (update from version 68 to version 76 as per the picture) but it will not update as the newer map (version 76) is "N/A".

I've circled this as the flash makes it hard to read.

Can anyone advise why I'm not able to update?

That's a great question which i was about to ask myself as well! Just got a new (2013) Mk7 and found out myself i could update the satnav via the VW website but using 32g seems redundant when we only need 2g for Australia! Even the factory SD card is only a 4gig one!

      • Question for you guys that have managed to update.... i was up until midnight trying and trying and trying some more to get this to work. 2013 Mk7 103TSI Highline, i've downloaded the correct map pack for Discover Media unit from the international site P51... 7z file 3.1gig, formatted the VW SD card to FAT32, copied over files = Satnav says "The navigation data in the infotainment system are not valid, please check data". Have tried this several times. I have also tried using the DiscoveryCare program which works fine, copies to the SD card and i still get invalid data when i put it in the car. I wouldn't be so frustrated if it didn't take sooooooooo long to copy to the SD card every time!

Also tried using a USB and doing MENU/UPDATE but it doesn't detect the USB at all.

The only possible problem i've found was a post on whirlpool saying that the 2013 models need to have a "Mapcare firmware update" installed from the dealer. Is this correct?

        • Maybe you shouldn’t have format the original vw sd card?

          • I didn't the first couple of times, just used the DiscoveryCare program which i'm pretty sure formats the card before copying new files anyway. But if you're doing it by the manual copy files over method, as per VW instructions you're supposed to format the card first.

Unfortunately it's ALL or the update will not work.
The update process does a "health check" first, i.e. checks to make sure all files and folders r available. If all good, then initiate update.
              Otherwise, it will fail.

There is no getting around it.

              • I guess it's always good to be up to date with the maps. I've stopped checking map updates since Apple finally introduced Google maps and Waze for CarPlay.
                Current:
                2023 Mk2 Tiguan R - Lapiz Blue
                2015 Mk7 Golf R Wolfsburg - Limestone Grey: Stage 2
Gone but not forgotten: 2008 Polo GTI Shadow Blue

                • I had to take our 2013 Highline into a dealer to get the maps updated as I had the same problems and they had a heap of trouble, took them a few days and downloading multiple times to get it to work. I haven't tried to update to the new maps yet as I don't want to screw the working system but will take a look at the latest ones soon.

If the car was under warranty this would have been covered but the previous owner never updated the maps but in the end I didn't end up paying but I think they quoted me around $100 to update originally.

                  • Finally managed to update my GTI (MK7 MY16)...the nav update program had been down for a while and erroring. My maps were over a year old - was using maps from this file - "DiscoverMedia2_MRM2_4517_0915_V02"

With a bit of sleuthing worked out it was easier to grab the new version directly here:

Extracted the files onto my SD Card (original 8GB card provided by VW) - archive contains a few folders (eg. maps/22, maps/23 etc.)
Successfully detected by headunit and shows as v1115 2019/20

                    • Yes I have the same issue. Does anybody know where we can get the mapcare firmware update without visiting a dealer?

                      • Can you please clarify, do you want the maps data or firmware?

If you want the maps, follow this link. It's in German but easy to follow. Just select your model and infotainment unit.

Mapcare ??? Do you mean Discovercare.
Doesn't appear that this has been updated since V 1.0.4 and is not supportive of the current generation of Discover head units or the current maps.
Just go to the Volkswagen map site as linked within mickfoz's post above.

                          • Sorry I should have been more clear. I did update the newest maps to my SD card. When I entered the SD card it gave me a message saying the infotainment unit didn't recognise the data. One of the earlier posters had the same issue and mentioned his head unit (in my case a 2013 version 1) may need a firmware update. Just wondering if anybody has this firmware and has updated the head unit to be able to accept the new maps?

Firmware updates, as far as I know, are not available freely on the net. You need to have this done at your next scheduled service. Make sure you let them know you want this down ahead of time, pref. at time of booking.

                              • Damn. I thought everything was somewhere on the internet!!! If somebody does know of this and can forward it, will be appreciated. I no longer get my car serviced at VW as they are to expensive so not much chance of a request there
