Will the Discover package linked in the post from Flipper Dog work for me?
The Touareg uses the RNS 850 which is a version of the MMI 3G+ from Audi.
Unfortunately map updates need to be purchased and installed using dealership SD cards. There is the actual map which is supplied by the dealership and then the activation code which you need to purchase.
Ridiculously expensive for what you get. Audi maps will work and may be available, see this as a guide - 2021 Audi Map Navigation Update Service MMI 3G 3G+ Maps OEM A4 A5 A6 A7 A8 Q7 Q5 Q3 A1 Genuine - Euro Car Electronics store
    Flipper Dog
    Now - T-Roc R, Audi Q5
    Past VWs- T-Roc R-Line, Golf 6, 7 and 7.5, Touareg 7L and 7P, Passat B5.5, Polo MK3, Polo MK4 and GTI

            • Well, I have hit a snag!
              Firstly: Golf 2017.

Painstakingly read through most of these posts....

              Current map details from screen
              3G0919866BF
              0821
              MRM2 2017/18

Followed all the details off the VW australia map download and downloaded the (what I thought was the right one)
              Unzipped as advised.
              Backed up the current map
              Loaded the new map
              Inserted SD back in car
Switched it on.... and "version error"

Removed SD and repeated, the same.

So back to computer reinstalled the old map to SD
Back to car and it worked fine. (lost all my points but thats fine)

So based on the web site, this is what it downloaded : DiscoverMedia2_MRM3_2010_v17.7z
              * I also downloaded DiscoverMedia2_MRM3_2110_v18.7z this morning and tried that and again same sad story.

So what am I doing wrong.?

Yes rather than the selected the from 2017 model I selected the from 2015 model - it did not have the model of media console (only the one on the 2017 model is the same).

I don't want to take it to the dealership only to be slugged $200 to updload something they (VW) offer for free.

The current map version is horribly out of date as some of the suburbs have streets that do not appear on the map.

              Thanks in advance.

              • Michael: Hi.

hmmm......... Map update files are highly susceptible to the model-type AND to the version MIB that is installed on the car (and the region - of course).

Your MY17 build vehicle very likely means that this car is a mk7.5 rather than a mk7 which is appropriate for 2015 map that you downloaded, And you don't say what version MIB (the "brains" for the infotainment unit that lives in the glove-box) is in this car -it matters!!

Maybe start again and faithfully follow the model/MIB criteria when selecting the file to download - meaning do this:
                1. Goto the download webpage Volkswagen Map Updates
                2. Click-on Golf on the Select you car page
                3. From the drop-down dialogue box - select Golf from 2017
                4. Click-on the correct MIB that is installed in this car from the Select you navigation system page
                5. Click-on Download for the World option on Select a region page (this is Australia region)
                6. Follow the prompts to download the update file
                7. Unpack the downloaded file and repeat the steps to load the update software onto the SSD card - as per your post

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

                • Hi Dom
                  Thankyou for your reply..
the other information I got was

                  Mib2.5 ?

                  Hardware 851
                  Software version 0842
                  Does that make sense.

Following what you suggested, is exactly what I did and it came up with the MRM3 instead.
The original is OEM and not a knockoff.

                  • OK - so your MIB is MU-S-N-ER 851 0842.

Let's confirm the MIB type that was factory installed in this car -like this:
                    1. Press and hold the MENU button on the right-side of the escutcheon plate around the Display screen for about three seconds
                    2. The screen should show the MIB Service mode page in the so-called "Hidden Menu".
                    3. Select Software update/version
                    4. Note the result in Installed SW train version (should be something like: MST2_ROW_VW_ZR_P0478R)

The entry in Installed SW train version shows the MIB type. The first 4 x digits decode as follows:
                    VW Discover Media
                    • MSTD = MIB1 Standard
                    • MST2 = MIB2 Standard

                    VW Discover PRO
                    • MHIG =MIB1 High
                    • MHI2/MHI2Q = MIB2 High

The map update file MRM3 that you downloaded is applicable to MST2 in the list above. Does this align with first four digits in the Installed SW train version entry for this MIB?

If your MIB is a Discover PRO unit (either MHIG, or MHI2/MHI2Q), you need the file from 2023/24 RoW MRM

                    • MST2_EU_VW_P19122D

I think what has been loaded from this is the EU version and not the ROW (Australia?)

                      • All good, I think what I did wrong the first time was to only replace the files in the maps that were in the new version.

I also found this site very helpful...

                        MIB_HELPER.com

You type in the train version (eg MST2_EU_VW_P19122D) and it lists all the files you can download.

                        Thankyou for your invaluable help.
