Well... it was worth the wait!

With 23km on the oddy from the dealership I was so giddy driving it home. Then had to leave it behind to go back to work! I just took it for a quick night spin around Sydney CBD/Southern Cross Dr.

It feels like the first time I drove my Mk6 GTI. It has me grinning and I can't wait to take it on the road again. So far I've been reasonably tame driving to loosen it up - but I gave it a decent go once it was warmed up. Comparing to my Mk6 GTI there's a few things that struck me:
    • Surprisingly feels more refined (not sure how they managed to make it feel like a step up!)
    • 1st/2nd gears more 'grippy' ?? ... i.e. no problem coasting over speed humps without any friction / feels less likely to stall. I wonder if this is due to the extra kW?
    • The pull and warble of launching into 3rd!
    • Improvement to the gearstick is very noticeable to me especially the the better clearance vs the front cluster
    • Initially missed the red glows but quickly appreciating the clean look that the white instrument lights give it
    • Not to jinx myself - but no rattles at all yet??

Car looks fantastic and I'm really appreciating some of the modern tech. Overall, very happy with my decision to upgrade. Might have to run some pointless driving errands this weekend!

At the dealership. (They're giving me first year's service for free to make up for the delay.)

Obligatory knob picture. Look at those sexy dimples.

Congratulations, I've had so many errands to run lately too [emoji3] enjoy

        • I saw a white ED40 in Chatswood/Willoughby yesterday around 12:15pm? I was in my other car and I couldn't say hi coz he just flew past me on the other side of the road. Just curious to see if it belongs to anyone here?

I saw a "40 Years" today at the start of the Pacific Motorway in grey. I've only seen a handful so far but see multiple "Golf R's" on a daily basis. Does anyone else like the fact that they are quite rare and certainly not as common as an "R". To be honest that put me off the "Golf R", the fact that there are so many of them about, plus I didn't find it as exciting to drive as the "40 Years.

Each to their own but another reason for seeing so many R's besides not being limited is that they have been selling for several years now, unlike the newly release 40

                • Just picked mine up my white manual GTI40 today. Haven't had much time to drive it cause I had to go straight to work. But I could tell that I'm going to love it already

What tyres do they run on the 40th Editions? Wondering if maybe PSS might make a difference to wet weather grip. Also, is that under power the understeer? I would have thought the tendency might be towards some power oversteer in the wet. maybe some tweaking of the front alignment could assist this?

I have driven high performance FWDs with LSDs fitted that tended to power oversteer in the wet. Just what is desired, with a little checking back into play from the stability control to keep it all civilised on the road. No point attracting attention...

I have not driven a 40th Ed but kind of expected they may be set up to achieve this...

You must drive pretty hard, I had a bit of wheel spin this morning under hard acceleration so I eased off. I didn't experience any under steer but my commute is mostly urban with a bit of highway driving. What type of roads are you driving on?

                        • I'm running Hankook S1 Evo2s on my car now. I've got aftermarket rims - Advan Racing RS-DF 19x8.5 ET45. I think I'll be replacing these tyres with Michellin PSS when the time comes. It was definitely under-steering coz when I took a right hand corner this morning, the front just kept pushing to the left and wouldn't really turn in.

My commute to work involves a bit of highway driving and twisty roads. I was prolly doing 30km/hr in the twisties this morning? In dry I think I can tackle those corners with much higher speed.

A wheel alignment sounds like a good idea. Maybe I should get that done and see if that makes any difference.

And by the way, a white Golf R with european plates NOO-000 (from memory) was toying with me on the M2 this morning. I overtook him and then he shot past me on the Lane Cove Road exit. Not sure if his car was stock but it was definitely very quick.

Having owned the MK6 R previously, the only thing I missed about the R was the AWD system in the wet. If it was in the dry, I don't think the R would stand a chance against the 40 Years on twisty roads.

It's not physically possible for a front-wheel-drive car to power oversteer. That requires power to be transmitted to the rear wheels. The only time you can have oversteer (not power oversteer) in a FWD is when the weight transfers forwards (so, under braking on turn-in), or at best, when the weight is evenly distributed across the axles when cornering on a trailing throttle (see Lift-off oversteer).

Must have a heavy right foot, I drove to work in the rain this morning and was pleaseantly surprised at how much grip it offered in the corners, modulation is the key word here.

You might want to try a drive in a Renault Sport Trophy R. They absolutely do power oversteer. And at respectably safe speeds on wet roads. Huge fun!

Go drive one and let me know if you enjoyed it... 😄

Lift off oversteer can get the back moving out even in the dry...
