Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Passenger Airbag On/Off Light

Hi, guys I don't know whether this has been mentioned before, however I was driving a 2015 GTi the other day and spotted in the centre console near the hazard light switch, a passenger airbag on/off light. I have never witnessed this in any Australian spec VW, and was wondering if this is a new feature and if so how does it work? I'll post a photo below.Click image for larger version

    • Is there a key hole to activate/deactivate the passenger airbag located on the passenger side of the dash (when you open the door)?

I didn't look. If I get another one I'll make sure I investigate further.

        • Hi all I've seen some dealer sales where they claim "invoiced price + $1", having a read around this can often misleading as it hides other discounts such as factory discounts, bonuses etc etc. Either way, is there a price I should be looking for for a Manual GTI with no extras? RRP is $41,490, driveway is about $45900.. seems to be some 2014 low km demo models for about $42k available on caresales.

          • Gti performance

Hi gti owners with dsg. I am looking at buying a permformance model of the gti. I have been comparing it to the new wrx cvt. both great cars really. Anyway just wanting to know if there has been any issues with the golf gti performance that I should know about.

            Any advice would be great.

            • ^ No issues with the DSG (6 speed very solid) or engine (a cracker). I drove the WRX CVT and was underwhelmed to say the least, very little character, gosh it was quiet, goodbye WRX burble. I think you'll find GTI performance reviews universally positive.

Came here to ask the same question (not newly signed up though). I've read elsewhere that the turbo's used in the GTI and R TFSI engines have a nasty habit of exploding, and that VW is up to something like their 8th revision? Anyone here experience this at all? I'll have to read around a bit more. As I would be buying new (or near new) then I'm not too concerned about this given the factory warranty.

In rare circumstances they do, although I understood this to be predominantly on the Rs (and S3) and that there had not been many cases reported locally. There certainly have been multiple revisions but unsure if these are all related to this one issue - perhaps someone else can confirm.

I can assist with near new.

I was in a similar situation before buying a GTI PP. I've had no issues so far (had car for about 10 months). It's a great car, I'm really happy with it.
comparing it to a WRX, I test drove one (manual, not CVT) and after the drive I decided it wasn't for me. Compared to the GTI, the interior is bland full of hard plastics, the entertainment/satnav screen it tiny whereas the Golf is a lot more luxurious inside with soft touch surfaces and nicer trim. Compared to my missus 09 Forrester, not much had changed for Subaru. If I were to buy the WRX, the premium package is a must. It was a great car though and had a lot of power but I needed something to drive everyday and thus, the golf is a lot more comfortable.
All depends what you want. A raw, performance car that's all about power and a bit more roomier = WRX. A comfortable, quick, economical and something a bit nicer inside = GTI.

Yeah my 15 minutes of searching after posting indicated it's more of an issue on the higher spec'd engines though I have seen some reports of issues on the GTI's. As you note it appears to be more of an overseas problem, though there have definitely been some locally.

I'm due to do some test drives soon, and have sat in both cars. The youtube videos I've watched from 'Winding Road' are good and the Golf looks and sounds nicer in those. The WRX with a premium interior is very nice too though. Seriously put off by the CVT and seen as I do 25,000+ a year I need something good on fuel and comfortable in traffic. Both have their merits but the Golf seems like much more of an all rounder.

I won't be in the market for a few months, but if she's still up for grabs I might have a look. I'm keen on the Performance packaged version though

                        • VW website seems to have something missing on their 'Build your VW' page - Stamp Duty/Delivery aren't included in the Drive Away pricing.

                          • Sat in a GTIP today and dissapointed to see noe push button start. Just feels a bit cheap and sucks because all the reviews I've seen (OS obviously) show the car having it. Picky, I know.

                              • But the R is meh.

Very picky though, I have stop/start in our other car and could not have cared less whether the GTI came with it.. maybe it's a cheap omission, but recall that sit down otherwise and then go and sit in all the GTI's competitors and you'll quickly work out the definition of cheap vs refined.
