Mick, there were two threads that are now combined into this one
I think I've worked out why everyone is saying that the rear is bland, and it's to do with the lights. On the front, the xenons polarise people because of the red line. Fair enough.
It also looks like we've been stinged on the rear ones too. On UK/Euro spec models, the indicator light is this cool LED line that cuts through the entire set of lights. Here, they appear to be the same as on the regular golf models. I think it's the main reason we think the rear looks so bland (and didn't mention this previously when looking at photos from overseas).

because even the new zealand GTI has the led strip doesnt it?
