It is your money, as they say... but that 2 grand on options on a Golf goes to zilch when it comes time to sell, I suppose.

Electric seats aren't standard, and I am not sure that sat nav is.
So it's 50K (+ ORC!) with only bixenons and a sunroof over a GTI.

You can be assured that the GTi will have a RVC and sat nav as the Highline 103Tsi does!

So, if VW could slip a GTI onto the Oz market at the same price as the outgoing model but now including 18 inch rims and sat nav/rvc then I think most people would be happy for this as a base spec.

With the crippling of the leasing market I think you will find manufacturers releasing models where once standard luxury items (HID, sunroofs etc) are relegated to the option list to bring prices down for self funding buyers (loan, cash etc)

Why is satnav such an important deal? You could easily say throw in bixenon for the same price. FWIW I find the pricing on satnav map updates makes it a less compelling feature vs something like a Garmin or Tom Tom with lifetime map updates.

        • You get free map updates for the first 3 years now. That said I'm more interested in the Pro unit with the Google Earth navigation.

People seem to want it for some reason...(i wouldn't pay extra). On the Golfs and Mercs the sat nav is around $1000 (if not standard)
As for HIDs... you pay $$$$ to get them, pay extra for insurance, then pay $$$$ to replace bulbs. Not something I could justify.

I'm surprised you'd have to pay extra for insurance on bixenons. And I've never had to change my bixenons on our 8 year old GTI before we sold it, and I've had 10 year old Evo 8MRs with bixenons still working properly. My old Mitsubishi may have had a dodgy auto box but its bixenon lights also was not an area of low reliability.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that while Xenons are $200 a bulb or some such price, they will generally last the life of the car and it isn't really an insurance risk any more as I don't think there is much theft of them in Aus, especially since they're quite common.

                • We have a 77TSI Mk6 Golf with halogens and a Tiguan 155TSI we got later was optioned with the bixenon. Have to say that in my neck of the woods, about 20-30 minutes from Brisbane, the auto-swivelling bixenons are just a godsent. The bixenon just illuminates much further into the distance which becomes very obvious when I switch to the 77TSI halogens.

                  • @readerror - But if you crash into someone/something, they're likely to need replacing, which would cost a lot more than the halogen alternatives.

That IS a new reason for not going for bixenons. So I guess for that matter, there's no reason to buy an R or S3 either because that would be far more expensive to fix in a crash, no?

                      • I don't expect it to be less than $50k. I expect it to be more. I said that.

You missed my point. I don't have a problem with all the extras and their cost.

I enjoyed your use of capitals and bold text to convey your excitement, though.

No, that was just my guess as to why insurance premiums would be higher with them. I want to get xenons as much as you do.

                          • I'm back! Word is that they are going to have a cheap, boggo GTI as well as a more expensive luxury GTI as well as a more performance orientated model... Whatever that means, all that I am certain about is that the first cars start arriving very soon indeed!

Bundling of options into packs has been under consideration for some time AFAIK. There are a ton of benefits of doing it this way, not least of which are better stock control (fewer option combinations) and higher resale.

                              • So basically a Standard GTi for entry level and then adidas/Ed35/pirelli versions with extras to come later.
