Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Actually, now that I think about it, I don't want him to buy the GTI, otherwise it'll be "Seriously Uncool"

      • Close enough! I guess it explains why it won't be on Top Gear though (wish it was)

          • +1 - does anyone know the Australian GTI launch date?

I gather some here have GTIs on back order. How is the price made certain for pre-orders? Subject to purchaser's approval (of price)?
If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

I'd expect so - pretty risky otherwise.

I remember when I signed up for a mk6 order that back then was a stupid six month wait, I had a trade in and the deal was still subject to them agreeing to that deal when the car arrived.

              • Hi, I've been monitoring these forums and this thread in particular for a little while, but I thought I'd register and share some of my research and experience. I'm obviously counting the days until I can upgrade my poor little 2.0 FSI Comfortline to the MK7 GTi.

                Pre-orders
After phoning all Brisbane dealerships I have been told that there are no pre-orders being taken. There are, however, 'Waiting Lists' which seem to be these flimsy, "Um...well...we can put you on this list for $1000 and you'll be first in line to get the car you want."

The amount of people on a dealership's waiting list (and each dealer has their own, even if they are part of a group) seems to vary depending on the salesperson, with the junior salesman telling me they didn't have anyone on the waiting list and then the sleazy senior manager telling me they had three names and that I should hand him the money then and there.

If you miss out on the first batch, you can order when they launch and there's a 6 month wait. I pressed them that maybe it's a 3 to 6 month build wait (like other manufacturers - specifically Mercedes) and they insisted that next order is 6 month wait.

From all accounts, October is earliest, but November is likeliest.

Estimated numbers per dealership and options
Naturally the Brisbane market is a lot smaller than Syd/Mel, but it looks like the stock will range from about 5-6 for the smaller dealerships to 10-15 for the larger dealerships on first run.

I've heard Red, Black and White. No one has mentioned blue, grey or silver.

No dealer expects to get the Performance Pack on the first run and most don't expect Australia to get the Performance Pack ever, considering Australia's climate and lack of autobahns.

                New Zealand Launch
Not sure if anyone was aware of this, but New Zealand launched the GTi today and you can see specs here. They are only getting DSG models.

Some of the rubbish that I've heard
                - The new GTi has the MK6 Golf R engines in them and the new GTi does 188kw
                - "True story": The Mercedes launch of the A250 was held in an aircraft hangar and they crashed two of their cars in front of all press because the radar technology behind ACC was blocked (Would like to know if this one is true?)
                - International launch date is August 1st and VW are flying "sleazy manager" over for the launch.
                - Kevin Rudd changed Fringe Benefits Tax and now I have to pay GST on my new GTi...

If anyone has better information, please share. If anyone can correct me, please do.

                • Mick.

Thanks for posting that, interesting stuff, particularly the NZ specs (no std xenons or discover pro - could that bode poorly for us?)

I've preordered loosely through a mate (it's essentially an placeholder order that is actually in as a mk 6). I've specced it based on the rumours of std equipment etc, so far, and the idea is that i will finalise the order and tweak if necessary when the details of the Australian car become known

Mercedes did do a launch of their auto-stop system (whatever acronym they give it) back in the S-class, I think it was. This was run inside a building and it got confused and crashed into the dummy car. We're talking at least a few years ago now that this happened.

Fifth Gear tested the new S class against similar tech on the Up and Volvo in the last year. The Volvo's one seemed most reliable. The S still goofed up but it did slow the car down and would have minimized the damage. The Up one only worked at city speeds tho.

                      • @elephino Yeah that was on TopGear, apparently they forgot to turn the system on.
Volvo has had similar slip-ups at press events.

Don't see why we can't theoretically get the PP. You'd want more than just 10bhp extra for Autobahn racing, which I doubt has any tight corners that would benefit the ediff. The PP GTI will still be less powerful than our detuned Mk6 Golf R (which as far as I knew had a similar engine with a bigger turbo)

                        • Isn't the trick with getting a car in the first batch to be flexible in your requirements to match the allocated stock for a set of dealers?

VW NZ still allows alot of options on the new GTI

19 inch wheels, HID , DCC, park assist, sunroof (strangely it can't be mixed with 19inch alloys), Onyx pearl white paint (all other colours are NCO), Adaptive Cruise and City brake, KESSY, Leather, Discover Pro, Dynaudio and 3yr servicing.

Isn't it just the fact that the passenger side mirror dips in reverse to see the curb?

Also, how things have turned. White is now a premium colour with a $1000 price tag and all other colours are free.
