  • Definitely good pricing by Subaru but I think they needed to given how much more competition there is in the market now.

Agree I'm not sure how many would cross shop - I want the GTI due to its clean looks, interior finish and style and all round ability.. the WRX offers the performance and AWD, but that's where it's advantages stop.

I'm also a fan of the whole hot hatch thing over sedan anyway (but do like the looks of the S3 sedan, 2 series coupe and I'm probably in the minority but I think the CLA45 looks a lot classier than the A45 hatch).

So for me the WRX was never on the shopping list. It looks ok, but still don't think I'd want to spend a lot of time in that interior. I work with a bloke who loves his Rex though, and while he respects the GTI he has zero interest in owning one.

Re: CVT. I understand the engineers tuned it to feel more auto/DSG like but it is still a CVT at the end of the day which are totally uninspiring. I drove the WRX engined Forrester about six months ago and it went hard in a straight line, but it was just all revs, then nothing as you backed off. Ok in an SUV set up I guess, but not what I'd want from a WRX.

As a further side note the Koreans are supposedly working on a dual clutch to be shared by Hyundai and Kia, so that will leave the Japanese flying the CVT pretty much alone.

    • I just love the Golf GTI and will stick to it. Not a real fan of the others.

Anyway saw a CSG GTI with tinted windows parked at Westfield Fountain Gate when i was driving home from work. Looked bloody mean and sexy!

Not sure if many cross shop the GTI and WRX, but still interesting
I really don't get Subaru. They had a gorgeous looking concept car that looked production ready.

Dimensions were right - in particular the size of the wheels/rims and wheel arches.

And then they release this POS looking crap.

The wheels/rims and arches just look like a wannabe pimped up car that was done badly.

Plus the generic looking front and rears.

        • Same torque as the GTI over a narrower rev range - I reckon you'd want the performance to be streets ahead of the GTI to go for it and I'm not sure that it will be

Well 0-100 is rated at 6.0secs, though there are suggestions its a very conservative timing.

That was going to be our next car when we saw the WRX concept, but once the early leaked photos came out, all hope was dashed, and then the reveal at the Detroit motorshow, that was it, the S3 sedan it was (we prefer sedan than hatches).

                • A few have asked what i ended up doing stereo wise, i ditched the focal idea as i found them boomy once i auditioned them.

Ended up going with this amplifier (MATCH PP 52DSP) and this subwoofer (MATCH PP 8E-Q). This brand has an aussie distributor and ended up getting it through Tonkins in Adelaide. AF build a loom customised for the Golf 7 so it was all plug and play.

Quite happy with the result. Speakers are yet to be changed and this should improve it further. Having the factory speakers amplfied really makes a great difference although they still have their shortcomings.

Oh good to see Helix/Match have a distributor in Aus now, their DSPs are quite advanced and integrate really well from what I've read in the UK.

                    • I would be keen to know people's thoughts on the sound quality of the stock system in the mk 7 GTI. I don't get mine for another month and was hoping that it would be reasonably good (I am not a super audiophile and don't require an earth-shattering thumping bass to shake the neighborhood, but decent sound across the dynamic range would be nice ....)
                      What do current owners think?

                          • I heard the Discover Pro with the stock speakers in my in law's car in Singapore. Thought it was a pretty decent improvement over the regular system on my Tiguan. Wish they had the Dynaudio option tho.

Anyone compared the stereo to the Mk 6 Dynaudio? Not so worried about the bass side of things. If it's as clear as the Dynaudio I'll be happy. I'll get another sub if I get an R (vs S3).
