A point of clarification for you DV52: The dealer quote was supplied by Lambertia. My response to that quote was in complete agreement with you. Lambertia's dealer was inventing a licence fee on the run or just spouting nonsense.
Also, fyi flight is very definitely male.
MY new Golf TDI should reach me within two weeks. Whoo Hooo!
Flight: my error. Appology for the attribution to the wrong author (and to you, Lambertia). Also didn't mean to question your gender (just a point of political correctness). I'm male too - at least I was the last time that I looked!
It's been a long wait for your TDI. Hope that it's all that you expect (I'm sure that it will be)

No problem DV52. I have no claim to being error free. I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.
Yes, it's been a huge wait of four months and I have tracked the car, or rather the ship, around the world until it landed in Brisbane. I'm glad I ordered the Driver Assist, which has received very good reports. Also the leather in "Shetland", which has since been discontinued.
I'm certainly not suggesting lambertia's dealer was correct, but a quick read of SUNA's website indicates licensing agreements and they obviously need to generate income from somewhere.
What if it is not a case of VW disabling traffic updates but rather the supplier doing it. Based on veew's correspondance with Customer Care it looks like VW and the supplier - SUNA? - don't have a service contract and once SUNA has enough of supplying free traffic updates, they might disable the code all together.
Dutch77 and Lupo - There is much in what you say, but I think VW, or the parent company would already be paying license fees to SUNA for features they include with various models. As far as SUNA's costs are concerned, the transmission of traffic messages to one car would be the same as transmission to all cars. I can't really see that VW would disable a feature that they have, albeit inadvertently, delivered to Golf owners. Although the feature isn't promised in brochures, neither does the brochure say that the feature is not included. To withdraw the feature would attract really bad publicity which they certainly don't need, after the DSG image problems.
Agreed, the SUNA site indicates some units/apps require annual subscriptions and others have lifetime supply.
My understanding is traffic hasn't been enabled on most VWs currently, but some people have been able to activate it either on their unit directly or via VCDS tweaks. I'd assume the ability to do this will continue, someone else had suggested that it might be disabled on service update. Time will tell.

Got our car today. TP was off but easily turned on in the settings. When you press the traffic button the updates screen comes up but says "no reports". Will wait a bit and see if I'm on the right station on the radio as well. There was a list of stations somewhere...

My car was delivered on Monday. The traffic and RDS are on but I don't get any updates. I'll play more over the weekend.
Stedes, lambertia: I had to do the VCDS tweak to get TMC to work on my Golf. But I don't have to be tuned into the SUNA station on the radio to get traffic reports. The two functions appear to be completely separate. Reception for the "Traffic" button seems to be automatically picked-up via the correct station regardless of where the "Radio" is tuned (which kinda makes sense).
Are both of you sure that you have TMC activated? I ask because before I did the tweak, I enabled TP and RDS on the radio setup and I got the word "TP" to show on the top line of the screen, but when I pressed the TRAFFIC button, I got the same message as you have quoted and no reports. I had to enter the magic number 1024 into the correct adaptation channel (with VCDS cable) before I got any reports.

Thanks DV...I thought it would be that. I don't have a VCDS cable yet so can't check. If anyone could confirm voice control via the cable as well I would order one straight away but as it is I'm still thinking about it.

I agree, I think its disabled on the VCDS. As for the TP, the manual says that it will continue to receive TP even if you're not tuned to a TP station. I'm not sure how that do that if you on a non-TP FM station but if you're on anything I guess the FM receiver is active.
It's not a heatbreaker for me as I'll probably continue to use my phone.
The only thing I really would like the car to do (which I don't think it can) is activate google now/siri when I press the voice button. But alas!

Somewhere on this forum (or maybe another), someone posted a link to Mobile Home, which seems to be a remote "Home" button for your phone, linked via Bluetooth. It seems like it might do the job.

Thanks for that I'll see if I can find something similar for Android. In my previous car my Jabra handsfree gave me this functionality. But it will take over the phone functions too so I don't think I could use that, though I might try.
Interesting re: Mobile Home. What a pity there isn't some way to have the voice control button to connect up to Siri/Google.
These days I've found the in-car Sat Nav is too slow and cumbersome to input the address (which usually I don't know or have to look up manually on my phone anyway). Instead I use my iPhone to activate Siri and say "Take me to [the name of a building/restaurant etc]" and then I'm ready to start driving my car. My phone is held in the right central air vent where it is easy to see my phone for Sat Nav or Trapster.
This is the product that holds my phone in the car vent, I would highly recommend it!
