Last week I took delivery of a Mk7 110 TDI with the Driver Assist option. I've only had time to take it for a couple of relatively short drives and have mixed feelings. My previous car is a Mk5 GT TDI which has been by far the best car I have ever had and in fact I still have it, getting it ready to pass it on to my daughter who currently has the Mk5 103TDI which was the first VW I bought. All were bought new.
The Mk7 feels like a larger car - very nice to drive but not as engaging as the Mk5. I bought it for the Adaptive Cruise Control (and other electronic goodies) which work very well - it's quite an unusual experience to have the car slow itself to a stop when following another car that has to stop and then taking off again once the one in front moves on. I guess we can look forward to the time when computers will drive the car for us completely. But as my granddaughter (just got her license and loves manual cars) said when I explained how the new car dove, 'That takes all the fun out of it.'
The BlueMotion engine stopping is a nuisance in my opinion. It has to act immediately to be any use so it often stops the engine when it's really no benefit for a very short stop. Diesel engines start easily but whenever this car does it there is a short delay when taking off and a quite noticeable sound of the starter motor. I'm not really impressed and wonder how much fuel it really saves when you take extra wear and tear into account. Making new parts to replace the worn parts due to extra wear also has an environmental impact.

Hill Start with Start/Stop Engine plus Paddles !

There is a big difference with Start/Stop tuned oh:
If you have hill hold on and you are stationary: The car's engine is off and will only start again once the accelerator is pressed.
If you have hill hold off and you are stationary while pressing the brake foot pedal: The car's engine is off and will start immediately once you lift your foot from the brake foot pedal.
I hope this might make a difference to people who would like to use this start/stop feature.
I have a few questions about the Driver Assistance Package, does anyone know if you get this option do you also get steering wheel mounted paddles of the DSG ? It would be fantastic if it did !!
I'm really only getting the Driver Assistance Package for the different driver modes plus the Active Cruise Control which I believe is worth the $1,300 alone. I hope I can use this as the deal breaker with my dealerGolf MK7 | 110 TDI | DSG | Highline |Limestone Grey | 'Rotary' Wheels | Driver Assist
