I am experiencing a low speed noise on my VW Golf MK7 MY16 (3 months old), the noise is like 'grug grug grug' and it comes for about 1-2 second at low speed between 4-8km/h and sometimes at 24-28km/hour. I noticed that it happens when not in changing gear.
The interesting about this noise is it only came after the car is warm / normal operating temperature i.e. after I drive for how about 30-45 minutes or more.
- Do I have to get the expensive VCDS ross-tech cables or will the cheap ones off the internet work just fine? I'm thinking of tinkering with the car (turn off stop-start) in the future if I can convince my partner to let me.
- How easy is it to kill the car using the cable?
If you're wanting to read very basic OBD functions then the eBay cables will do fine. If you're wanting to code modules / make settings changes, there's really no substitute for VCDS - it's a top product. If you're only likely to use it once or a handful of times, just contact a fellow forum member who will be happy to code your car for you in exchange for a 6-pack. See here: VAG-COM scanning, who can help
If you are extremely careless/reckless with making changes, then yes, you can do damage to modules, and potentially render the car undriveable - technically it's possible. Like anything, if you apply due care and follow instructions slowly and carefully, you will be fine.
- Can I use carplay or android auto AND use bluetooth at the same time? My partner has a Windows phone but I want to install a cheap phone, maybe a iPhone 5c or a cheap android and use a shared data only plan sim and use it for navigation and music. Can she make/receive calls on her phone using bluetooth AND use app connect at the same time?

Golf 92tsi vs Polo 81tsi with Drivers comfort package.
Hey guys. Getting really confused in terms of what model to choose for the new car !
Have driven both and had a 81tsi on order last year and have owned a 77tsi with sports pack in the past which I loved. Though with the 2.8% deal they are running at the moment I had a drive of the 92tsi and it's pretty on par minus a few features but the size is amaze.
The thing that gets me is the Polo chassis (though good) is 6 years old where is the MQB platform is much newer .. Opinions welcome !
Previous VW; 6n3 Polo 16v, MkIII VR6
Current; 9n3 Polo GTI
I love Polo but for no tangible reason I'd prefer the German build of Golf and the newer platform over the South African build of Polo and its much older platform... Polo is still lovely though and you get a lot for your money.
Just an observation but it's interesting that despite most of us having faced DSG issues over the years and some of the whining that goes on in other threads that most of us are still sold on owning a VW and are happy to work around the trouble spots.
FWIW I'd be happy to own the 7 speeder on a 3-4 year purchase cycle but any more and I'd be looking at a TDI/GTI/R model to get the wet clutch.
I have had a TSI90 for 2 1/2 years with no issue. I heard that one of the issues is that the oil used must be completely synthetic and just before I picked up mine, VW issued a directive to change the oil to synthetic on all incoming cars from Germany. I am selling my TSI90 Comfortline privately to buy the newer TSI92 as it is a business vehicle, which I turnover every 2.5-3 years. I realise there are some people who have had issues with the DSG but it would be interesting to know what percentage that is as any car forums always seem to have a large number of people on there who complain about issues with their cars, giving the impression that the model is a dud. We think the TSI90 Comfortline is the best car we have ever owned. Have test driven an i30 Premium and Mazda 3 SP25 recently, which, compared to the smoothness and quietness and accurate steering and torque power of the Golf, left me fairly unimpressed. The only 2 things in my mind that I could complain about visually is that, unless you buy a GTI or R, the Golf's styling is very conservative and the colour choices here, compared to Europe, are bland and boring. When VW updated the rang last year with the App etc, would have been great if 2 or 3 new colours could have been introduced/replaced the old. I have spoken to a dealer and also have spotted very very few Sunset Red Golf's on the road, apparently it just doesn't sell. Why you would have 2 different silver (we currently have the Reflex) colours and another grey in the range is beyond me. Sure, it's a very personal choice, but the colours in Germany are much better. Just saying....
I'm also driving a 90 TSI Comfortline but wagon and it's my first VW. So far no problems with my DSG. You forgot to mention the fuel economy, I'm getting 6.5L/100km long term in Sydney traffic and loving it but it does require 98. I really enjoy the torque being available at low revs and less noise in the cabin compared to similar cars at the same price point. Lastly I am enjoying the sound quality from the speakers that come standard with the Golf, I reckon they are pretty good. I've only had the Golf for 6 months but I already feel that it's time to move up a grade to a GTi
I'm genuinely interested in why you think running 98 is better for a car specified for 95?
Considering every research out there proves there is no measurable performance gain running 98 when 95 is specified, and where there were gains made due to smart engine management system, the gain is so insignificant, it doesn't justify the additional cost.
There is also no evidence to suggest additional engine wear to run 95 in a car specified for 95.
Because I average 6.6L/100km in my 1.8TSI on 98ron as opposed to 6.9L/100km using 95ron. There is also noticeably more torque that comes in at lower revs.
On a cents per kilometre basis doing 25,000km/year the extra cost of 98ron works out about the same as a coffee every week. As a % of total fuel costs it's pennies.
YMMV.
The 90TSI might be different. Certainly I wouldn't run the twincharger 118tsi on anything less than 98ron but that engine is a lost cause anyway.
I agree, in terms of wear the 98ron would do nothing although the better additive pack would help reduce cylinder carbon build up and build up on the injectors.

Fair enough, I've just heard so many conflicting claims, it's always interesting to hear more people's opinion, and the results of their own experiments

I have meticulous fuel records from the day I bought the car. I wouldn't run 98 if I didn't think it worth it.
If you keep fuel records then give 98 a try for 4000km (2 or three tanks isn't enough) - you might be surprised.
If you don't record your fuel usage then don't bother as you won't be able to track it using the very popular "I get 600km to a tank" method.
Or be like my FIL and claim it doesn't work because he fills alternate tanks with 98 then 95.
