Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • iPod Connectivity through a simple USB port in the MK7 or does the music on SD Card work more efficiently?
    • Any real advantages in forking out for the Comfortline aside from the Climate/Wipers/Camera items?
    • Has anyone had any issues in replacing the standard hubbies with nicer wheels? In turn, would this greatly affect the current drive away deals?
    The i-pod connects via Bluetooth.

Base 90 TSI or Comfortline? Plenty of us have gone through that weighing up the options and value. It really depends on what the extras are worth to you. A camera or climate control might be essential but mean nothing to someone else. However.... at the moment the driveaway price for a DSG 90 TSI base model is $23990. Driveaway in the Comfortline DSG 90 TSI is $31681 That's a $7700 difference when the normal price difference is only $3500. That alone makes the base DSG a bargain compared with the rest of the range, even the base manual which is only $1000 less than the DSG at the moment when it is normally $2500. They must have a big stock of base DSG/s to get rid of.

Wheels? I was lucky enough to score a set of the 16" Toronto wheels and tyres (German made Michelin Energy) off a Comfortline that had been upgraded to 18" wheels and as part of the deal got the 4 for $800. Each wheel alone through spare parts was priced at $680 so I felt I did alright. My white base model looks like a Comfortline now until you notice that there are no parking sensor marks on the bumpers.

    • Have a 90tsi comfortline dsg.

I noticed a bit of rattle when I drive super slow and let go off accelerator. Is that the waste gate rattle?

I also noticed smudge on driver side and noise when using wiper.

Have my peace of mind first month check tomorrow.anything else I should test and report to the dealership?

Also my phone connected through Bluetooth but always say "no tp".what does that mean? I can't stream any sound music,GPS or other from phone to car and it won't even play on my phone as phone thinks it should be playing through Bluetooth. Only phone calls work. That said, when I'm in phone call other sounds then work (e.g. GPS still ruining in background will give directions through car speaker if I'm on call). If I'm not on call boo sounds! Any ideas?

      • TP= traffic program. This is a steam that comes from the broadcast radio stations, but is encrypted in Australia and VW are too cheap arsed to pay the licensing, so we miss out on traffic updates for navigation. Disable it in setup and that message goes away

        • Had the first month check. Heads up for all new owners: use a hose to test your wipers for an hour or so because apparently wipers are covered by warranty for only 1000kms after which it costs $62 to replace. Sadly it hasn't been raining in Canberra and I only found out about the smudge and noise of wipers when I went sydney last weekend where it was pouring, but that added extra 700kms on my odometer and went past 1000kms and dealership can't cover under warranty.sigh..

          • Suggest you ring VW Customer Service & have a bit of a dummy spit. It won't be the rubber part, it will be the wipers themselves. As described elsewhere (this thread??), VW don't have a fix for it yet.

Cheers, thanks for the advice. Current driveaway price for the 90TSI also includes metallic paint too, so even with the addition of alloys, we'd still come out a long way ahead of a Comfortline. A lot of the "features" missing from the 90TSi are just plain irritating. Surely items such as automatic headlights, door pockets and rear cupholders cost next to nothing for VW? Considering the vehicle itself is otherwise excellent, these are somewhat forgivable.

              - I will need to pay half of the cost through VW Finance. Does anyone know what sort of interest rate these guys work on? Assuming it's best to get registration sorted through them?
I'm currently paying my Polo through VW finance with an interest rate of 9.99%pa. Hope that somewhat helps.

Brad: You are entirely correct, it was a manual Golf and the my other error was that it happened on the Monash freeway (not the Eastern freeway). My errors notwithstanding, the pivotal part of my diatribe was not the specific details of the horrific tragedy involving a Golf, it was that VWA has a long history of denial (and I'm not talking about a river in Egypt!).

To your point about the "Disclaimer Clause" in their brochures, I make the following observation: I am perfectly relaxed with VWA's right to make changes to the specifications of their vehicles. However, I don't beleive that VWA (or any other business for that matter) has the right to not inform potential buyers of errors in previous publications that their dealers have distributed. The brochure that I have from the period when I purchased the vehicle clearly states that Voice Control is standard on all highline series. Yes, VWA did subsequently alter this part of their brochure. But I (and I suspect that many other folk that were given the original brochures) was never advised of the change that had occurrred to the specs for the Golf. I'm not even sure that VWA actually made any effort at all to publicise the change in specs (does anyone here remember such a press release?)
Anyhow, perhaps my self righteous indignation is misplaced, but I think that I have a pretty good case.

                • No doubt VW are arrogant bastards. No doubt they are ethically in the wrong. They'll still win.

                  • Called up vw customer service and explained my problem with the wipers and warranty yesterday. Got a call back from them after manager had a review of my query. They would me they've spoken to my dealership which should contact me soon to organise to come to fit wipers for free. Yay

                      • Have just spoken to VW customer assistance regarding the unintelligible pronunciations from the navigation system. Firstly he acknowledged that VWA recognise this as a problem and secondly he advised that while he could not provide a date for the firmware upgrade to fix the problem his advice was that it is expected in the first quarter of next year. All dealerships will be advised via a technical bulletin when the firmware is available.

jdbrown: I got pretty much the same message from VWA about the bad pronunciation on SAT NAV. The difference in my conversation was that they said that they had no idea when the firmware upgrade would be available and that it would be entirely upto their third party supplier to schedule the fix into their program. Very unsatisfactory reply.

Yes very unsatisfactory indeed. VWA are selling a product that is not fit for purpose i.e. Does not work as originally intended

On an antirely different matter, another problem that I'm having with my Golf is very poor FM radio reception. I've spoken to VWA about this, but they say this is not a systemic issue. Do you have the same issue?
