Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

No not at this time. I'm only doing city driving and have not experienced poor reception I also don't have the reported wiper problem. Perhaps I'm lucky? My car is a TDI Highline and a July 2013 build.

    • Front side is rattling at low speeds, and worse than before they put the waste gate clip. Anyone experiencing the same? I'll report that to vw for next check (Monday) when they install wipers and fix paint swirling

      • Hi all, does your Golf looks like this under the bonnet? Just curious. I've got a black material covering the battery. Is it there for a reason? I haven't seen it before. Thanks

        • I'm pretty sure it's an insulation jacket

It's an insulation jacket to reduce the heat soak into the battery (or maybe the cold overnight).

If you look at post #164 in this thread
you'll see the Skoda's have a plastic box (plus the insulator between the plastic outer & the battery around the sides as wel).
You can buy the box for $41 on aliexpress - I have no idea if it would fit a Mk7 easily but they certainly look better.

            • one of the backwards steps of the Mk7 vs Mk6.....The box in the Mk6 looks a lot better quality wise than the flappy jacket on the Mk7

                • When you think of how often you might lift the bonnet, who will see it, whether they would really notice and does it really stand out from the rest of the junk lying around in the engine bay, does it really matter what it looks like? I mean it doesn't really stand out as being something offensive or out of place. It's not sitting in the middle of your console or on top of the car. It's just a piece of fibre that has saved VW weight and money, and like all manufacturers they've been doing that all over the cars for years and years. Save the money and use it on another tank of petrol to enjoy some driving.

                  • Depends where your priorities lay I guess.

The cover keeps the battery clean & the engine bay a bit neater, although the engine bay in the OPs post looks a bit "all over the shop". Also provides a bit more insulation & if the battery pops, it will contain the acid a bit better.

I've wasted $40 on stupider things

                    • Picked up my brand spanking new GTI yesterday, amazing car, just love it, even after owning a 110TDI Highline for 6 months.

Couple of weird things - no GTI badge on the tailgate. Missed by the pre-delivery guys, missed by the dealer, and missed by me at collection. My 11 year old daughter picked up on it when she inspected the car. Dealer has sorted that out by sourcing me a badge from another dealer as they had none in stock. Second thing - the key fob. The keys I got were plain black plastic, no chrome GTI branded end. I got the chrome bits in a separate bag. Dealer said they came like that, and that it takes a special tool to change over, a tool which would take 8 weeks from Germany to get!

                      Heres my key:

and heres how it should be:

Only two little things that in no way take away from the awesome that is GTI

                      • What the heck, that sounds like total slackness! The first R I took for a drive had "GTD" inset in the steering wheel! The builders in Wolfsburg must be blind...

Mine has poor reception from time to time, no excuse for it as I am usually within 15k's of the CBD. At it's worst I had no reception on any preset station, lasted about an hour. I regularly notice a slight reduction in reception via sound quality, again, nothing major but it is becoming increasingly frustrating.
