Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Picked up my carbon steel GTI Performance Pack just before closing this afternoon. Took all of a week from deposit to keys in hand - got lucky with one already on the way. Not sure whether it was a cancellation or for the floor, but either way, it's in the right garage now.

Took a few months of research and test drives to make the final pick, after the family advised me that my Pug 207 GTi was too squeezy in the back for the kids (11 & 14). The Octavia RS was a strong contender but the ridiculous wait to get one killed its chances.

    • Ordered my GTI PP in red on 23/8 - there was one at another NSW dealership they trucked in, so picking it up tomorrow! Am now getting paranoid though that it may have been used for test drives, or been sitting out in a lot somewhere. Thanks to the shipping link, I've just found that it arrived in Oz late June… so what would have happened to it since then? Any ideas? What do you think is an acceptable number of kms before it counts as a demo? It is definitely meant to be new. Also, I'm a bit confused about the MY14/MY15 thing… the contract says MY15, but it clearly was made before June 2014… Help please!

There are too many unknowns for you to proceed. Since your contract specifies MY15, stick with this, though your contract will also specify an estimated delivery date, which could be months away.

        • It says Sept 15, "subject to availability" as I think they always planned on getting one in from another dealership - at one point they were saying it would come from VIC… arrghh!

          • I would insist that you be given the opportunity to inspect the car before they register it into your name, if it's not too late. Delivery kilometres various a lot, but I wouldn't be happy if there was any more than 20km on mine.

            • As per Mikey, if its got less than 20-30km then highly unlikely its been used for any test drives. I wouldn't see any other major issues if that's the case, but if you want total peace of mind then insist on checking it and/or holding off for a fresh one if there are any doubts about where it has been.

While this is an enthusiasts forum so it seems like quite a few PPs are being bought, anecdotally the bulk of sales have still generally been standard GTIs with options, particularly those that wanted to access manuals (although with xenons not on MY15 standard models this is forcing buyers to choose lights or transmission effectively). And while red was a regular color in the Mk6 range, it's a lot less common in the Mk7s so the combination of PP and red might have been enough to see it 'slip through the cracks' and sit around for a couple of months.

              • Ok, so I just spoke to the dealer and yes, it was meant to be a 2015 (as per contract) but is a 2014 (most apologetic - sounded sincere, who knows!). It has 22km. Dealer said it was sitting in a warehouse, just had all the stickers removed this morning.Definitely new, no issues. What do you think? Do I hold out for different 2015-build, meaning several months' wait and argy-bargy with dealer, or stick with this one? Seems legit… but I can't afford a lemon.

                • The MY14 to MY15 changes in this instance are irrelevant, however some would argue that the MY15 has a bit more value down the track although this rarely plays out in practice. Given your contract states 2015 then you'd be within rights to wait a while longer for a red PP to pop up; or see if they will negotiate anything less and/or extras on this one.

The car itself will be fine.

                  • Thanks for your voices of reason… I think I'll go tomorrow planning to take it unless I note something that seems wrong. Will try to get something thrown in but not holding my breath on that one. Hoping to be able to post a pic soon! I was one of those who wanted a standard GTI, but was after the bi-xenons. When I learned the option was no longer available, the cost of the xenons plus DSG made the PP the logical choice for me.

                    • Based on the latest information provided to you by your dealer, suggests the only anomaly according to your contract is the model year, which Dutch77 has correctly advised the differences are largely irrelevant, but you will miss out on the "40 Years Golf" decal fitted on the rear window. Perhaps, this can be sourced as a spare part, and thrown-in by your apologetic dealer. Best of luck with the delivery tomorrow. The colour chosen is a real eye catcher, and you'll soon forget how the car was sourced. At least you don't have to wait the best part of 6 months, which I'm having to endure, though even this is nothing compared to those waiting for an A45 AMG hatch or sedan, which I believe is now up to 18 months.

                      • The other MY15 change on a PP will be red 'GTI' lettering rather than the silver on the MY14. This further differentiates the car from the standard GTI. I've actually seen a few photos of red MY15 cars on other forums and with the red paint and red stripe, the red lettering is too much. I think the silver looks better anyway.

But if you wanted to match the spec, I am sure the dealer would swap the badges over for free. They don't cost much

                        Enjoy that diff!
