No electrics on seat but no big deal, the placement of the mode and engine-off override switches on the passenger side, and the placement of the window controllers on the drivers door.
The Discover Pro is a NZ$2,750 option in NZ and GBP1,015 in the UK (upgrade from Discover Media in both cases), so VW Australia would have been correct in having reservations about its popularity for the 5+ years of the life of the Mk7 range. However, this is cold comfort to early adopters who are true enthusiasts and would have paid the AU$2,000+ at the blink of an eyelid. I would have!

The placement in the armrest of the electric window controllers in the Mk7 is similar to where they are in the Mk5, which is definitely a step back from the great location in the Mk6. In my Mk5 GTI, when I'm driving up to a boom gate and I need to take a parking ticket or swipe my proximity card to enter my office car park, I often open the driver's side rear passenger window instead of the driver's, which is most annoying when I'm in a hurry. The problem is, you can't see the switches unless you take your eyes completely off the road. Not very ergonomic Mr VAG!

I'm sure a few would have but they obviously made the same decision there as they did with premium audio and not bothered.

I don't know what I'd pay to have the bigger better unit.. although I'm thinking if it crept too far into four figures I wouldn't be bothered - ergo, I'll live with the unit as is. Certainly no retrofit options here unless one falls off the back of a truck!

Perhaps when the 'family' car is due for replacement I'll go the VRS wagon.

      • I saw a blue Octavia VRS wagon today, really like the dark blue colour! I think it would be my next car down the track as well!

Congratulations and looking forward to seeing this one in the flesh.

Yes you managed to pick about the worst day all year to pick up you nice new shiny GTI. I bet it's got a nice coating of road grime right now... and only 1 day old

          • Veew: there was a blue VRS when I was picking up yesterday, totally agree with you and will definitely be on the radar. Could be just me but seems darker than the old model much the same as the Rs swap from Rising Blue to Lapiz Blue.

And I'll be re-reading your headlights thread after my freeway run last night.

Tigger73: yep Hamish gets to do his thing Tuesday. He did a work colleagues A6 S-Line last week, he should be paying me a finders fee.

Ironically my last trip to the hills for a drive coincided with that wettest day in 40 years we had a few months back. Might need to rethink your invite to me for June's VWW cruise!

Nice step up from my old Mk6, either I've forgotten how that car felt or the Mk7 definitely picks up with more urge which I'd expect given the big bump in torque.

I hadn't actually been in a Mk7 prior to pick up so can only echo a couple of across the board sentiments of 7R above - the control placement is a minor frustration, and wow Discover sucks. I would have thought after the class leading RCD/RNS systems that this would be a step up and it's not. Which is a shame because the MFD presentation is so crisp and clean.

But anyway.. I didn't buy this car to play with the screen so that's a minor gripe.

                Cheers mate, indeed it is.

Some real pics will occur in due course once the ordered rims arrive.

And after driving on the freeway at night I understand the xenon option now - although as I would spend 1% of my time on unlit roads at night it still wasn't worth it for me. If they just sold them withou^^. Moving on.

I've bitten the bullet as a bit of a guineapig and opted for one of OZ's latest - the Leggera HLT (not to be confused with, but not dissimilar to the Ultraleggera). Will be the first set in the country, the 18s have only just started rolling off the production line. Hopefully they work well on the car, if not I guess I will look for something else.

Stuck with 18s for the performance/weight advantage, and the fact I can keep the tyres the same.

I'll be posting more information in the wheel thread in due course.

                      • Nice set of Rims.
I have a GTI being delivered later this month, can anyone recommend a good place to get paint protection in the Sutherland Shire or Alexandra and a detailer to get the out going car ready for sale.
                        Thanks.

Niiice! Are they gunmetal colour? They look great, will be interested to see how they look on the MK7. I've been considering a set of Gunmetal Superturismos on my car

So will I as no one has really been able to get a handle on the finish. The OZ official description is grigio corsa bright, or bright race grey. The best I can gauge is that they are a cross between silver and grey, with a somewhat shiny finish. I've had feedback from someone who went to OZ in Italy and saw them direct and their description lines up with this description. I'm hoping they line-up well with the CSG finish on the car!

I can definitely vouch on the OZ ST LMs in gunmetal - I actually posted a pic in the GTI thread today on a suspension query of my Mk6 wearing them.

The good thing with the OZs is they're in an 18 x 8 ET48 size which will work well with the GTI; in fact you can basically go OEM with the ST LMs as they also come in a 18 x 7.5 ET50 size as well.

This probably belongs more in my Mk7 wheel thread, but in any case if you decide to look at the OZs let me know as I can get a sharp local price on them.

A cheaper alternative if you like the finish (less spokes) are the VW Rotarys, some sharply priced units being sold by vwparts in the sale section as well.

                              • Just secured a White Golf 7 R. Picking up next Wednesday 14 May 2014.

Sure beats the 4 month wait I had for the GTI back in 2011.
