Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Thanks Gregozedobe, hard to find definitive info in any forums. I can understand tracking them, with high sustained revs and lots of oil up in the valve cover together with cornering Gs may encourage more oil to get past the seperator. But maybe as a DD it's not so critical. Guess I will have to run her in and they eyeball the inlet tract and maybe add a supplementary catch can onto the PCV outlet if it's getting a little wet with oil.
My current Suby has a good aftermarket AOS device under the oil cap through which the crankcase vapours are directed and after adding it I have zero oil in the inlet and intercooler. Prior I had enough oil to easily notice.

    • How do you make your turbo happy?

Give it a turbo muffler delete, intake elbow & new intake

      Goes nicely with the JB4

Next stage happiness requires a dump pipe...

      • Guys ... I've seen some clashing reports on the EA-888 and it's fuel system. I'm aware of the carbon deposit problems that occur in most direct-injection-only engines, so I was relieved to read that our engine has the port fuel injection as well to wash the back of the valve heads and stems of the deposits ....

        CJXC/CJXB EA888 engine: VW Mk.7 Golf R

But a seemingly credible review on the 'Tube has the EA888 having direct-injection only ...

        YouTube

Anyone know for sure what the EA888 in the Golf R has for fuel systems ?

Post 'script - I bothered to read all the comments on the Savagegeese review - it appears the 'Septics get direct-injection only, while the rest of the world get duel fuel.

        Geez.

I've read that (from Oct 2018 ?) all Golf Rs (every market, worldwide) will have only Direct injection. This change happened with the WLTP-compliant EA888 engines, as when they added the PPF/GPF/OPFs to the exhaust they no longer needed port injection to meet the new WLTP emissions standards. So if you want port injection as well you will have to buy a pre-WLTP Golf R.

          • Apparently US spec cars have been direct injection only for a number of years, EU models are now going the same, but it appears MY19 aus-spec cars still have port injection.

My impression was that the pre-WLTP MY19 Oz-spec Golf Rs still had port injection (as did the UK ones), but ALL the post-WLTP cars would be DI only (and this included Audi S3s). If it saves VW money to drop port injection then I reckon they will definitely drop it. I guess time will tell (when the actual cars start arriving in Oz) ....

              • I’m thinking of tracking my 7.5 and have tried to find a resource on what that will do to my tyres... and if I should get an extra set of 18’ rims to smooth out the drive rather than keep the 19s. Anyone found a resource or have an opinion on this?

I've been stewing over these huge bloody 19's for a while now - more so since I crashed thru only a medium sized pothole in town a month or so ago. The sound was just awful to someone who's suffered from mechanophilia for so long. General consensus is they're only for cosmetic reasons. When I was following the Formula-1 series not so long ago, the preferred tyre profile was not much lower than 50 series, and had been for years.

Not that I'd go right back to 50's of course, but if someone sent me the right dimensions/specs for an 18-inch wheel and tyre combo for the R, a bit wider than the standard 235's, I'd be sorely tempted to shelve these 19's. But for racing, definitely a cheap set of 18's with semi-slick Nitto's solely for use on for the track. No question.

                    • “Standard” 18’s are 225/40/18, but 235/40/18 will fit too. If you go wider, you’d need to go back to 35 profile, thus defeating the purpose.

Anything from 18x7.5 to 18x8.5 & ET45-50 rim size will work too

The sweet spot would be 235/45/18 on 18x8.5 ET45 - slightly wider tyre and a bit more poke than stock.

Would 245's fit on 18x8.5's ? I'm really keen on going wider if I'm going back to 18's, and don't forget the sidewalls will still be taller than stock. Keeping the rolling diameter as close as possible would be good too. Asking too much ?

                            • Anyone with the Golf R SE experiencing clicking noises from front steering / brakes at low speed e.g. in car parks etc? Have seen a couple of forum posts about it.

Dealership told me about it and noted it was something to do with the two park brake assembly.

Yep and started a whole thread on it.

Seems to be a common issues with all SE's. Mine is going in to get fixed on Wednesday and will report back in the main thread.
