Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VW in Darwin. This is the 1st bad service I have had but something this obvious shouldn't be missed let alone touched during a normal service. They don't worry about mods (the dealership approves and wants me to take them for drives) but they have always said to me that if there is engine problems that they will investigate thoroughly to find the fault

    • ^thanks for that I've been thinking in the carbon fiber intake APR system, but of course there's always concern about warranty.

        • Hey Sekas, how are you finding the tuning box? Have you got a photo of it (presume it is a plug in rather than a standalone ecu tune?) What kind of performance gains have you made with your mods? Cheers

          • I thought I would do a "sergioscirocco" and post a link to this self-confessed UK car geek's 3 month review of his manual Mk7 Golf R. It makes an interesting read, and with his performance observations, begs the question if anyone really needs an ECU tune, with all the risks associated with it, if you only drive on public roads.

The tuning box makes a massive difference whilst still being completely fine for everyday driving. It has 9 stages on it and is set to 6 as standard but I'm running mine on 7 as I have the intake, you can go to 8 if you have an exhaust as well. Yes it is a plug in unit. I'll add photos later today after the AFL GF.
Performance figures wise I haven't done a dyno but with my p3 gauge I'm am consistently getting 3.7/3.8 0-100km/h times with launch control and 4.4/4.5 without so that's a lot better then stock. 1/4 mile times unavailable as hidden valley is getting resurfaced so no events until next year but off others in Europe I should be able to get 12 sec flat. All these times are done in Darwin heat aswell so at the moment the lowest temp I have done some runs has been 23 degrees so cold air may result in better times. Also the tuning box itself is quoted to give me an extra 55-60hp and 90-100nm of torque.
Any other questions feel free to ask. I have also been running these mods since 6000km mark and just about to pass 15000km.

And does anyone know if the golf R has the ability to run e85 from factory?

                      • Go onto there Facebook page or website and send them a message. I got mine for roughly $1400 of the top of my head. So equal to a tune.

                        • Just might sneak this in here, what engine oil are most people using in their R's?

Was looking at getting some Castrol Edge since that seems to be what VW use?

Seems the Castrol Edge FST 5W-30 is the only one that meets the VW504/507 rating so I am assuming that is the best thing to use for top ups?

                          • I was told by Northstar vw that if you take your golf r back to the service team they will top up the engine oil on the spot, because if you top it up you have no way of proving you filled it correctly and warranty will be void.

Hmm, might touch base with them and ask.

While I do recall the "pitstop" service being offered and them talking about fluids and tire pressure I would be pleasantly surprised if engine oil was free as with the Kia servicing to be done via the dealership to get an extended 3 years of warranty engine oil was normally charged at $50/L plus an environmental fee for disposal of the old oil (during a change obviously).
