  • ^ Agree Mikey1, not sure how it got through so quick (unless the Shipping tracker was inaccurate and it actually arrived a few days earlier than stated, even then it would still be very fast). I am very happy with my color choice having not seen it in the flesh before ordering (and coming from previous white and silver cars), good news is that she looks fantastic even better than I expected

Wow Andrew - congrats. Mine was on the Carmen also. It did dock on 2nd May and I've been checking the dock cams occasionally. Must have been over 100 cars unloaded and about half of them are still there. I'm guessing yours one of the first to get loaded on a truck. My girlfriend saw your post and wants me to call the dealer...now!

Would be great if you can get it delivered before the weekend. I'm hoping for a phone call tomorrow myself!

      • I'm jealous that you guys all live in Melbourne, only because you have to wait less for your car to be delivered. Mine still has to be transported to Adelaide 😔

DrK has had similar previous experience to you, so apparently not that unusual, but not typical either.

I have a long history of white cars, and find it hard to break the shackles. I thought about LSG or LB, but every time I see a PW with a black sunroof and all the black high gloss exterior highlights, I think PW is for me. I just wish black door mirror backs were part of the PW colour package. Silver reminds me of when TV's, Hi-Fi components, DVR's, etc only came in that boring colour.

            • Panoramic Sunroofs

Can somebody help me understand why panoramic sunroofs have replaced conventional sunroofs in many brands and models. Their popularity appears to have taken a bit of a nosedive, particularly from those in hotter climates who claim the mesh retractable blind is not nearly as effective in blocking heat as a solid blind. Personally, I would prefer the previous design.

                Gday Mikey,

I noticed on your signature that you have an estimated delivery date? how the heck did you get one of those for a manual? All my dealer could give me after taking my deposit was "wait and see... probably end of the year"?!?! I'm particularly anxious because i have a commercial hire purchase vehicle currently and have to get rid of it by October 10th.... I placed my deposit 2 weeks ago on my R.

                Kind Regards,

                Joe

I agree (about the solid vs mesh blinds), I had a 08 VW Eos with an actual "panoramic" sunroof, and it had a solid blind which I loved. It had air vents in the blind which still allowed air to come in with the sunroof open and the blind closed. On the matter of pano vs conventional, they are bigger better and IMO superior in every way to the conventional ones. The panos tend to open outside the car not into the roof space like the conventional a do, and therefore do no effect head room as much.

Why have pano roofs replaced conventional sunroofs? Because they're larger and they open up more so are generally liked more than regular (smaller) sunroofs.

I wouldn't say their popularity has taken a nosedive though.

Out of interest, why would you have preferred the previous design? I definitely prefer the pano roofs these days.

I wish the GTI/R/S3 one was as big as the Merc A-Class one though :s

Hi Joe, where do I start? I hope you obtained a great price on your new Golf R manual, as your dealer has taken your deposit and failed to fulfill his contractual obligation to complete the box above your signature which reads "Estimated Delivery Date". If he left that box empty, then I would return immediately and complain to the sales manager. If the contents read "TBA", then I would be on their case for an actual estimated delivery date. Now as most forum members know, Golf R manual models are not due for production until the start of MY2015, which is calendar week 22 commencing Monday 26 May for models sourced from Germany. Assuming my order and others, whatever the model, will be made and completed by say mid July, then loaded and shipped to Australia, taking approx 6 to 8 weeks to get here, this should result in a mid to late September delivery. I wouldn't be happy to wait much longer than that, and neither should you!

lenojd, thanks for your post. Many forum members in this thread have commented that the panoramic roof is a complete waste of time and money for them, especially for those who live up north. Whether they would have selected a standard roof, if available, I'm not sure. I have the previous design, which I'm very happy with. I like the fact that both the glass and blind retract within the space between the roof and headlining. The Golf, by design, has ample head room for most front and rear occupants, even when a moderate amount of headroom is lost due to this design. Of course, the panoramic sunroof is less invasive on headroom, which I'm sure plays a part in its design. I notice the wind deflector in panoramic sunroofs is of a completely different design to that previously. Its fabric material doesn't look as durable compared to the hard plastic ramp of the previous design. I'm hoping my concerns will come to nothing, as I've ordered this option.

I also believe that nowadays the new panoramic sunroofs play an important role in the car design, specifically in the light colours like the white ones where the sunroof changes and gives it a bit of sportiness to the car.
I used to have a kia optima white and looks grate with the black roof all the way, and a Cla in black in which case you could notice the roof but in the white ones totally add that bit more of sport looking, same case for my new R, I love the way it stands out and match the rest of the black gloss of the car.

                            Hi Mikey,

Sorry i have been given a delivery date but its the 30th of November! Also i've been notified that the production date is the 15th of July for the manual... so if its around 3 months to build a car then one month to ship, that would make it November correct?

I would say it should take less than a week to build, but 3 months to get it here down under.

I love sunroofs in cars, can't really get a car without a sunroof now.
I would prefer the panoramic sunroofs over the conventional ones but only the proper pano roofs like the one in the Merc's and SUV's.
I dislike the pano roof in the mk7 as it isn't any bigger than the old one and i prefer the roof to open inside the roof rather than come out and sit on top of the roof in the mk7.
Pano roofs look really good when you have a lighter colour car and then you have the darker pano roof.
