Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

That's complete crap. Very sorry to hear that. I'm glad they've admitted that it needs a new gearbox but it won't make you feel any better, particularly as I'm sure you can't drive it waiting for the parts. I really hoped this issue was sorted with VW. Surely they will provide you with a free courtesy car in the interim. If not I'd push for some sort of compensation, particularly if you need car for work. I didn't think it was this series of DSG's that had a problem. My father in law just had his Tiguan DSG blow up. Unfortunately it's a 2nd hand car but the car dealer is paying for the parts but he's still $2000 out of pocket.
I've had 2 manual GTI's and had electrical issues (minor) with both. They were good at sorting these though.
Now I'm waiting to pick up my DSG GTI Performance. The extended warranty is a ridiculous. $2,400. Maybe it will be worth it.
    Hope everything gets sorted mate.

No, I can't drive it while waiting for the parts. Dealer is organising for VW to provide a loan car

Only problem with these is that they only fit 7.5" width (tires)

As a quick poll, does anyone particularly like the rims they've gone with as standard?
A dealer (north shore Syd) told me a month ago the "first batches of Rs have limited options and likely later in the year or early next we'll be able to order more options...audio, rims, seats, tech and screen functions"
Not the sort if thing a dealer would make up if he wanted my sale now? But why would they do this unless they wanted to perhaps avoid the delays the VI experienced by simplifying orders and therefore able to build ahead of deposits being slapped down?

Depends what these actually are - are they the common 18 x 7.5 ET51 wheels or the much rarer 19 x 8 ET41 wheels?

If the former then I'd suggest you'd be doing it for track work where the 18s will outperform but may as well go a lightweight option (and you'll obviously need new tyres regardless); if the latter then the tyres would swap straight across with no issues.

Then no problems in using same tyres.

Definitely got the price for 19x8, only for looks no track work. If I can find the vw part number for the pretoria wheels I'll get a price for them on Monday

Will be interesting if it's any sharper then what we've seen floated around so far.

As nice as they are, unless you simply had to have an OEM wheel, I'd be saving a few dollars and buying a sweet set of branded wheels and keeping the change.

I do love OEM, but you might be right. I don't have an R yet, I'm still tossing up over an R or an S1

The bad news is that the replacement will need to come from Germany and will take approx. 4 weeks!
Oh dear. Mechatronics failing in a 3,000km gear box. That doesn't sound like VW have got this DSG business sorted, does it.

Not really. Hopefully it's just an isolated incident and everyone else's (including my replacement!) will be ok

                              • What the hell, seriously? Not sure if I want to spend 60 grand on one now. Isolated case? not with VW though. Wonder if demand for 2nd hand ones are soft because of this reputation? Good luck with yours anyway!
