Stiff competition for the Mk7 Golf GTI - First Edition
Er... No. The pulsar is not relevant to this thread. It's a rice boy car. I would sooner mention the focus st as an alternative to the gti or the new civic r

The pulsar SSS is an effing terrible looking car, comes with CVT transmission for goodness' sake, and according to car advice will be in the mid to low $30k bracket. It is in a whole class below the Golf GTI (and GTI competitors). It may compete with Hyundai Veloster Turbo, but I think that even someone looking at a comfortlineGolf wouldn't be tempted to the SSS.
Interesting point on the Focus ST, latest Motor mag 4 way comparison with Veloster Turbo, Focus ST, FT 86 and mk6 GTI still has GTI as their top pick, even though it's essentially 4+ years old (or 8 years old if you grant that the mk6 is basically a mk 5.5). I was expecting the new ST to take top position in that class until the mk7 Golf comes out.
Some massive hype also in the latest Motor magazine about the mk7
I sat in a new A-class at the Sydney motor show and it felt quite claustrophobic (less interior width than the Golf). Vision out the back was appalling due to small rear windows. And the plastics seem quite low rent for a 'premium' brand.

Same. I too checked it out at the Sydney motor show. I felt rear headspace was very tight but I am prepared to forgive that since I rarely carry rear passengers. I thought the interior was ok except for the airvents.
Pity it is taking mb too darn long to launch the car. I want to update a lot sooner.
The more I look at other cars the more I appreciate how classy and ergonomic the golf interior is. I never thought it was that classy n my mates were just saying it for the sake of it. The dials on the dash are so stylish and simple to read at the same time!
If this article is correct, if the a3 is being launched in apr-may then the golf7 is due June-July. I don't think they would want to launch them too closely together

Cars Guide and The Motor Report say it will also come as a 6 speed manual. But more a Polo GTi competitor since they've decided to give it a 1.6 turbo (+ the pricing).
And yeah, it looks ricey
Resident grumpy old fart VW - Metallic Paint, Radial Tyres, Laminated Windscreen, Electric Windows, VW Alloy Wheels, Variable Geometry Exhaust Driven Supercharger, Direct Unit Fuel Injection, Adiabatic Ignition, MacPherson Struts front, Torsion Beam rear, Coil Springs, Hydraulic Dampers, Front Anti-Roll Bar, Disc Brakes, Bosch ECU, ABS
The new Pulsar SSS suspiciously sounds like it will inherent the new Renault Clio engine and gearbox. I think it's Nissan way of cashing into the hot hatch market seeing there're basically the same company.
Suddenly remembered another car that could compete with the mkVII Golf GTI.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrofoglio or QV (i think that is how you spell it). Seems to be about the cost of a Golf mkVI GTI DSG but with a bit more kit and the italian soul. Although it is only available as a manual, so DSG lovers probably wouldn't look there.
sigpic TRADED THE BEE'12 Sport Yellow/Black Citroen DS3 DSport THP155 6-spd manual w/ tech pack.

I read somewhere that the new Clio RS will only be available as a 5-door and having a dual-clutch transmission. Not sure how well RS enthusiasts will respond to that...
But yes the engine does sound very similar.

It's already been compared (and lost) numerous times to the Mk6 in various magazines. If you must have an Alfa Romeo then sure, it's an option.
Purely on looks and presence it makes the Golf look bland (well, the Golf is bland)
Everyone that is a car enthusiast needs to own at least one Alfa at some stage
the std giulietta with QV pack comes with dual clutch transmission and is a pretty sweet car. not as quick and not as good a handler as the golf gti. but yeah a bit more soul than you'll find in a golf.
the thing with the golf gti it will always be a wolf in sheeps clothing. so in dna it kinda has to have a touch of bland !
ps watched this review of the audi a3 sportback, described as a more expensive golf..based on ofcourse the mk7 golf platform.
clearly not golf gti competition. be interesting how they price it. one worrying thing they say is the 6 speed dsg isnt as quick snappy as previously hmm..
Once had a Red mk6 GTI + DSG + leather + sunroof + mdi + towbar
I was behind one the other day on the M1 and it had plenty of poke, I would've had to shift down an extra gear (bear in mind I've got the 7spd) to out-perform it.
