Have been looking at some new wheels for mine, but just can't find the right set at a price I like.
Looking at some Simmons FR-1, but the cost to get the centres repainted is a bit exxy
Yeah I know the feeling, I was super lucky with my wheels, got them through Gavin Walsh, second hand but never fitted, never even had a tyre mounted to them and got them at a really good price. I can’t count how many times that man has helped me throughout the years, he’s a bloody legend.
I never thought I’d like Simmons on a golf but the FR-1s actually look awesome, what colour you thinking of painting them?
So it’s been about a week of driving on the coils and I have to say I’m very happy with my decision. I’ve been mostly driving around on race mode because I’m a bit silly like that and my wheel fitment kinda necessitates it. They are very firm but not crashy at all, I’ve tried out comfort and normal modes too though. Comfort would be great for long drives but I do get a bit of rubbing on the rear tires when it gets a bit too bumpy, normal is a nice medium and doesn’t rub on anything but the bumpiest roads. I definitely prefer race most though, it feels very planted and gives a lot of confidence in cornering. I’m definitely gonna be upgrading the rear sway bar soon though.
The 034 top mounts are a little squeaky when turning the wheel at a standstill but that’s about the only complaint with them so far. Time will tell if I end up going back to oem, so far I’m probably gonna keep them in though.
The springs seem to have settled a little lower now which is also a bonus, really happy with the stance now.
Those are some nice quality coilovers - good choice.
Interested to hear what you think of the 034 strut mounts/bearings. I had them (the street density ones) and absolutely hated them on my Mk7 GTI. They just constantly rattled and made noises (common complaint on forums etc). I removed and refitted them several times incase it was an install error. Ended up selling them and fitting brand new OEM mounts and they were beautifully quiet.
Also just a tip when installing the front shocks, I had to spread the hub a lot more than I felt comfortable doing as the shocks are about 1mm wider than stock. I had to make a custom strut spreader out of an old bolt (about 10mm wide)and have pretty much the whole weight of the car to get them to seat all the way into the hub
So you like how the Damptronics ride? Where did you get them from?
I’ve only driven a few kms so far as I want to get an alignment done but very impressed so far, it feels more planted and body roll has been greatly reduced. It had racing line lowering springs before with the stock shocks and it was very quite harsh and crashy. Once I’ve done a few more kms with them I’ll be able to give a more thorough review.
I got them from europartshaus BILSTEIN B16 & B16 EDC/DCC COILOVER SUSPENSION KIT - VW MK7 & 7.5 GOLF – Euro Parts Haus
They were great to deal with and had them shipped to me less than 24 hours after I paid for them. Total was a little over $5k including 034 top mounts and bearings
