Golf W MK7 2015 Head Unit upgrade for revers camera

Hi guys
Hope everyone doing well

I just purchase a Golf Wagon MK7 from 2015. Very basic model with just cruise control and BT.
No parking sensors and no reverse camera.

I checked the head unit installed and this is the model number: 5G0035819A

Doing a quick check online doesn't look this unit can support the reverse camera.

Anyone can tell me what model will support the camera so I can look for an used one online?
Don't need one with navigator.

Also would like to know if I need do some programming with the VCDS after the unit is installed.

I am planning to buy the kit of cable and camera online. Maybe from Europe.

hmm.............. changing the "head unit" (it's called "MIB") isn't a difficult task physically, but it will generate a Component Protection (CP) error on the CAN bus.

CP is a protocol that VW says is meant to combat the black-market for stolen parts - but maybe it's objective is to reinforce the dealer's role into the job of changing modules? CP means that when key modules (the MIB is a key module) are changed- the new module must be re-registered into the car's software (it's a kind-of re-authorization of the new MIB that is specifically tailored to the car's VIN).

Anyway, the official way to clear the CP error (which will arise on the first ignition switch-on after the new MIB is installed), is to visit a dealer. The unofficial way to deal with CP error(s) is to buy a hacked MIB module.

Answer is yes, VCDS (or OBDeleven) can be used to re-program the new MIB. My suggestion is to generate a FULL database-file of the old MIB before you remove the module!! VCDS call this database-file an "Adaptation channel map" and OBD11 call it a "Back-up". The values in the database-file for the old MIB will then need to be aligned with the coding values in your new MIB.

PS: if you intend to use a 2nd-hand MIB from a donor car at a wrecker - I suggest that you first check with the dealer before buying the new unit. Many dealers refuse to clear CP errors if they also don't supply and install the new MIB.

I find a unit that has the same part number of my 2016 Caddy that has reverse camera installed, so I think this unit is capable of that.
The problem is that the unit is already de-installed from the original vehicle so I can't do the "Back-up"

There is any other way to make the MIB work on my car?Or you know someone will clean the CP error without ask to many questions?

hmm........ not sure that I understand. If the old MIB has been removed, it ain't a big job to simply pug-it back into the Quad-connector that lives at the rear of the glove-box (all you need is the electrical connections- you don't need to physically slide the MIB back in-situ)!

Of course it's entirely a matter of your choosing - you can decide to proceed without a database from the old MIB. If you do this, you avoid the effort of producing the old database - but you increase the post installation job of aligning the coding of the new module with the factory installed equipment in your car!

Just as a measure of complexity of the 2nd job above -here are the stats for a typical MIB:

• Long-code string = 25 x Bytes
• Adaptation channel count ~ 1,000

The first stat above means that your new MIB will have 200 x separate software switches that can be set to either OFF/ON (you will need to decide which). And of course, then there is the additional task of aligning the values in the Adaptation channel database. Even with the advantage of having access to a database from the old MIB - the task of aligning values will still involve lots of guesses because the new MIB will have many new adaptation channels that won't be in the old MIB and vice-a-versa! This normally means trial-an-error refinements in coding attempts!

Again, entirely your decision!!

With CP errors active on your new MIB - the likely effect will be no volume (or minimal volume).

Ostensibly there are 3 x ways of dealing with CP errors:

1. As I have already said, if you buy the new MIB from a donor-car - you will need to visit a dealer (this is the official method of clearing CP errors).
2. If you buy the new MIB from a donor car - I'm aware that there are some folk that can "hack" CP errors remotely by hooking-up the car to an internet connection. This is usually a fee-for-service facility. However, this method requires that you have ODIS (which is another type of diagnostic device) and it requires that you allow remote access to your computer network (using software like "Team Viewer"). I'm not recommending this method - but it's available (maybe someone else here can provide details of service providers)
3. Again as I have said - the third way is to buy a new MIB that has been "hacked". In most of these units, the CP errors will still be present - but the hack avoids the effect of the CP errors. There are lots of these sellers on the net

I repeat again (tautology intended)- the choice is entirely yours - but you can't avoid the need to deal with CP errors in this type of project (alas)

So If I want install a revers camera, the only option is go to a dealer and check price and if is possible to do it.

hmm........ I suspect that you are not understanding my words (maybe) - if so, the error is entirely mine!!

Let's start again - yes, I can totally understand how the NEW MIB (I assume this is "the unit that I find") will be "already de installed from the car and the car was sold".

Again for emphasis, the module from the donor car is what I'm calling the NEW MIB and when it is installed into your car - you can create a Adaptation channel map for this NEW MIB using the CAN network in YOUR car.

Separately, the OLD MIB (emphasis on "OLD") is currently installed in your car and you can also create a Adaptation Channel map for this OLD MIB before you "de install" it from your car

So, if you do as I suggest above and after you install the NEW MIB into your car, you will have 2 x Adaptation channel maps that you can compare. The task will be to align the values in the NEW MIB to the values from the OLD MIB (as much as possible) because the OLD MIB values fit the factory installed equipment in your car!!

Of course, you will need to make further modifications to the coding on the NEW MIB after you retrofit the new, reverse camera if the donor car didn't have this camera installed,

Hope this makes better sense, now.

BUT(and there is always a "but") - if the NEW MIB (i.e. "the unit that I find") was simply removed from a donor car and you install it into any car that has a different VIN (without any modifications), it will generate CP errors as I have described in my earlier replies. Ain't no way around this fact on MQB platform cars - it will happen, alas!

If you want to see CP in action, you can try a temporary experiment: simply unplug the OLD MIB from its cables at the rear of the module housing and plug-in the NEW MIB. After the first ignition switch-ON, you should (will) get CP errors!!

If you then "de install" the NEW MIB from your car and re-install the OLB MIB and then cycle the ignition a couple of times - the CP errors should/will be cleared and everything will be returned to normal because the CAN network will re-recognize the identity of the registered OLD MIB.

So If I want install a revers camera, the only option is go to a dealer and check price and if is possible to do it.

I am looking to buy an used MIB from a guy on marketplace for $40
The model number is: L56VW2 / 1K8 035 150 H

I also have a VW Caddy 2016 with reverse camera and the original unit installed show on the System Information the part number: 1K8035150A

I am not an expert but looking at the parts number they are identical.

So I was thinking to buy the used one because should be capable to manage the reverse camera.

Do you guys think is this correct?

So - I'm not sure how to explain the issue of CP error in another way, or maybe I'm misunderstand your proposal?

Assuming that the L56VW2 / 1K8 035 150 H unit has reverse camera functionality (I don't know if it does), won't you be attempting to install a MIB into a car that has a different VIN from the car in which it was first factory installed?

If this is indeed the case (as I understand that it is) and assuming that the new MIB hasn't been hacked - why won't it not generate a CP error after the first ignition switch-ON?

Again, if my understanding is correct - the installation of the new, L56VW2 / 1K8 035 150 H unit will result in CP errors that will need to be addressed as per my previous replies

What am I missing?

I have a Golf MK7 2015 without reversing camera. The MIB unit installed is an: 5G0035819A

I also have a Caddy 2016 with reversing camera. The MIB unit installed is an: 1K8035150A

I have the VCDS cable and software installed on my laptop and working 100%.

I find on marketplace an used MIB de-installed from a Transporter 2017 with model number: 1k8035150H
The seller said that the vehicle didn't have reversing camera installed.

My question is: the unit for sale on marketplace has the identical (apart for the last letter) model number of my Caddy that has reversing camera, if I install this unit on my Golf and use the VCDS software for do an "Adaptation channel map" I will still have CP errors....correct?

If the answer is YES, I am screw because I can only install the reversing camera at a dealer.....that will charge me possible $5K

Correct - you are right-royally screwed (meaning f#*ked-up on a large scale)!

But don't take it personally because you are in very good company - anyone who tries installing a MIB (that hasn't been hacked) into a car that has a different VIN to the original factory fitted car is also screwed!!

Not sure about "$5K". If a dealer is prepared to clear CP errors on a MIB that the dealer hasn't installed - i wouldn't be surprised if the cost is somewhere close to the annual budget of a small African nation!! Which is obscene and outright theft because the actual ODIS procedure for clearing CP errors is not complex
