  • HELP!!! My cluster looks like a Chrismass tree...

    i there,

I drove the my Golf Wagon MK7 the whole morning without any problems, everything was working fine. I parked for 5mim to get something from the petrol station and when I came back the whole car went crazy. I started to get several warning lights and errors in the MFD, even my key stopped to work. To get back going I had to disconnect the ground from the battery for 5min and then I was able to turn on the car again.

When I got home, I did the scanner and reset all the codes to see if they went away. Few errors gone but several still persisting.

Does anyone have any clue of what happened??? A bad connection somewhere?

    Thanks all!

    Guto.

The scans before and after cleared are here:

      Hi,

I know for a fact if the battery is on its way out it can give you some errors, it was like that as I found that I needed replace the battery about 8 months ago. I went back to the shop that I bought it this morning and checked the battery and is all good.

I actually was digging in I found the ABS module lost all the coding, luck me I had done a full back up not long ago. It fixed the flashing lights on the cluster but still throwing me few errors.

I uploaded the scan to the share above.

Make sure you have the coding done when replacing VW batteries.

Correct, unless you replace like for like exactly (same brand and model of battery), you will need to code the new battery using VCDS. A failure to do so will mess up how the car deals with the battery and can lead to premature failure and lots of other errors.

Your prescan certainly indicates a bad battery (been through this on the A1 and my R) in a similar fashion. As an FYI, a failure to code the 1st replacement on the A1 lead to another failure within 9 months ....

When they replaced the battery I asked if they recoded to the car and they said yes, but how can I find out if has been done correctly?

                Okay,

Before everything, I'm really thankful for all the help from you guys. I really appreciate the help and coments.

Things improved a lot during the day... I was able to do a lot of basic settings and now I ended up with just a couple errors.

Now I'm stuck and have no idea how to get them fixed.

                Any clues?

                Thanks.

Where did you take it for the new battery? If not a VW dealer or a VW/Audi specialist mechanic, unlikely they actually did it. Places like BatteryWorld and RACQ/RACV etc cannot do it properly if at all.

I quick checked in vcds and the Amp matches with the battery (still need to find the BEM sticker) but I wont be able to totally check before the weekend as I’ll need to remove the battery to see if there’s any sticker on the sides.

It was a battery place near where I live. They said they use a machine that inform the car the new parameters. Probably they dodged me on that.

States its capacities etc and usually a serial and model number

hmm.......... whilst changing the battery might have been necessary - it might be a red-herring. I'm not so certain that it was the cause of the original Christmas tree effect (I'm more than happy to be wrong)

hex03 error suggests that module is unhappy about how you have set-up the trailer function? What is the history of this module - it is original to the car? Has the long-code string been changed - if so, do you have a copy of the factory value?

hex17 module error is more problematic - it is recorded in your post above as "priority 1", it is "confirmed" and it is present in ALL your previous auto-scans.

"Check Sum" is software insurance mechanism that ensures the integrity of the individual Byte/Bits. It's a small-sized block of data whose value is derived from the rest of the digital data - for the purpose of detecting errors that may have been introduced when the module is reprogrammed, or if there is a unauthorized-change/failure in module memory storage.

The DTC has fault frequency=1 which meas that after first registration, the error hasn't reappeared in a subsequent ignition cycle. I can't deduce if this result is significant because you have removed the date of the auto-scan above

What is the history of the instrument module - what was the car doing on 17th October 2021 @ about 1:16 PM (was this when the "Christmas tree" happened)?

                              Don

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.
