Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Cost to replace strut mounts

Hey guys. I got quoted 1350$ by vw north shore to have my strut mounts and bearings replaced because the suspension is clunking at low speeds and around turns. Considering I’ve seen this type of work being done before the cost sounded crazy to me. It’s a 15 minute job on each side. And it’s a relatively small part. What are you thoughts on this quote? And what do you think is a fair price to have the top mounts and bearing replaced?

Oh also i got quoted 770$ for front rotors and pads. Thoughts? And do the rotors actually need to be replaced? Their thickness i think was around 24mm

Strut mount and bearings - that quote is insane. The parts can be purchased from AutoInstruct for about $250 and you can change them yourself if you have some basic tools. Otherwise 1-2hr labour cost from a mechanic.

I did them myself recently on my Mk7 GTI.

With you being in Sydney there are so many independent VW specialist mechanics you could use.

As for your brakes quote, that seems reasonable for genuine disks and pads and labour. But you could buy aftermarket disks for about $150 and then high quality pads for $100-150 and get the mechanic to change them at the same time you do the strut mounts and bearings.

My front mounts are noisy. Car has only done about 12k since new. Dealer not interested in replacing them under warranty.

After 3 years dealer has replaced them. They were faulty from factory. Don't they test drive these things?
