Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Sunroof - flat or tilted?

Is the sunroof supposed to be nice and flat along the roof?

My car had some work done and it dips down, and I was sure it used to be nice and flat.

    Maybe I'm remembering wrong?

It's going back on Monday as the groaning type noise happens quickly on the highway going over sections of road, and maybe they need to put it back to flat as well.

Photo to show what you mean exactly?

My sunroof is flat and sits nicely aligned with the shape of the roof.

Not sure if it's hard to tell but it dips down at the front and obviously is a bit higher at the back

Here is mine. Yours does look like its not aligned correctly at the front. You can fix it yourself easily if you have some basic tools, otherwise get the VW dealer to do it for you. I cant remember if they use Torx head screws or normal screws on the adjustment tabs, ill try to remember to have a look after work.

Thanks. I was thinking, this used to be perfectly flat. When I mentioned it someone said it is designed like that for wind resistance, or something like that, now that it was tapered.

It's going in on Monday so I will mention.

For knowledge sake, it would be cool to know where the adjustments are made.

It should be flat when closed and inline with your roofline as best as possible.

The front adjustment tabs are accessible from inside the car. They are on either side of the sunroof towards the front.

With the rear ones, tilt the sunroof up, then if you stand near the back of the car and look at the sunroof, you will see the screws on either side of the sunroof which are exposed once you tilt the sunroof up. If you loosen the screws, you can then adjust the sunroof (perhaps 1cm in total, up/down) to get it sitting flush with the roof.

I will try and get some pics for you.

Thanks, no idea why they left it uneven.

Well, it went in today and I asked them to make it flat again but they wouldn't do it as it was in spec and matched other cars, they said.

I can't believe it, it was flat before they worked on it and I just wanted it back the way it came.

This must be what VW mean when they tell us to expect a little more.

Ask to see both the comparison cars and the VW repair literature on adjusting the sunroof as the repair document will be quite specific about dimensions and tolerances.

I bet the former doesn't exist and the latter hasn't been looked at.

I can't be bothered going back to these guys for this, I'll do it myself and visit for warranty work only.
