  • Manifold inlet runner / oil catch can mk6 golf gti

Mechanical help please --- I have a question, my manifold inlet runner was replaced by VW ( thanks to head office) over a month ago on my 2010 gti. 45000km. Will this be an ongoing issue with the carbon build up which means I will be up for another inlet runner? Or Is a oil catch can an option to prevent this from happening again?

I too have a 2010 GTI, I've had mine changed at 50000klm, then at 100000klm this one I'm on now has lasted the longest. Not sure if the last one they put on was a revised part.
    Good luck.

You would be wise to add a catch can system, as it will only help, but so too it does not stop all the blowby. The other option is to use the various upper intake cleaners, available at Supercheap etc, every now and then, and keep the buildup down. It is a huge problem across a lot of brands, you should see the issues Ford is currently having, makes VW look great.

or drive it very fast for 10-20mnts every month or 2. dont have to becompetitively fast.

happy laps events were my italian tune sessions

never had any intake manifold issue with my mk6 gti.

Hahaha I shouldn't have a problem in that department

Good idea Greg, I messaged you on Facebook the other day about the 42dd catch can. If I work it out $500 catch can versus a $1000 minimum VW runner I think I would add one.

Have you been thinking about a catch can to reduce the risk? BTW how come you removed your Carbonio?

I think catch cans are only good for the Golf R. I removed the intake as it caused fuel trim issues with my bluefin tune. Just as it was asking for all the boost at certain throttle positions it would hesitate. I put the stock box back on and wow! Perfect. I've been running the BSH intake for a few years with no issues but now I'm back to stock box. I just swap and change when I get bored.

I never thought to test that as bluefin wanted an air intake upgrade. I always thought mine was a bit off.

Catch cans will improve the long-term performance of any engine that recirculates and burns its crankcase fumes — unfortunately they won't get 100% of the oil (I think you'd need both filtration and refrigeration for that,) but every little helps.

Afraid I gave up 42DD some time ago, when the dollar dropped, and there was no way to keep the prices competitive with direct import. There are several truly excellent catch cans out there now, all you need for a VW specific one is the adapter plates and manifold tap, for the FSI engines anyway. Nobody I know of has a proper system for the TSI and its more complex twin blowby outlets.

I believe in catch cans that much that I actually have 2 of them in series in my TDI, and my inlet is dry at 50,000kms, just EGR soot, and minimal at that. I still had number 1 cylinder inlet valve stem buildup, which is one of the two main issues of blowby.

CTS have a good one for the 2.0TSI engine. The PCV plate machining is pretty awesome.

That was the one I've been looking at, but can someone explain what the noise pipe delete kit is and why would I want to delete the noise ?

The FSI engine is easy, you can buy just the blanking plates and put whatever catch can you fancy in. The GTI with the TSI needs the "Africa" plate as it is often called, and I don't know of anyone selling it separately. I also know that this plate alone isn't a total solution, as when it was first developed by Forge, they had plans to re-design it, and given the complexity, to my understanding that has not yet happened. I know when I stopped 42DD they were also working on a TSI solution, but again I think no final outcome there either.

Your call, but on a GTI a $25 can of Liquimoly upper intake cleaner from Supercheap every few months would be a real option, especially on the TSI.
