    isnt the mk6 a 1st gen?
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

No idea. But if that's the case, then it'd be even less likely that the warning light would come on.

I think the Threshhold is 20% Drop from Initial Set pressure..

Afterall it is only really calculating it based off Wheel Speeds etc..

Yes, though the trouble for a 1st-gen TPMS is that the loss of pressure has to be really obvious to the system (i.e. sudden or rapid).

the 2008 MkV jetta that i had had the TPMS and i found it worked quite well. If ALL of your tyres drop by the same amount then it would not trigger the alarm as it was a comparison between all of the wheels on the car. When i had a slow leak in one tyre it detected a loss of about 6 psi in that tyre compared to the others. Turned out I had a screw imbedded in the tread causing the leak.

I had it go off recently in a carpark on a sharp turn into a park.

Checked all pressures - all spot on and same as they have been for months

Reset it and hasnt been an issue since (few weeks back)

On my MKV GTI, it did detect a slow leak very early on - was impressed.

Electronics huh, not always what you would hope (well, especially ones from VW)

I went on a long trip (900km drive) a few weeks back and stupidly didn't check the tyre pressures beforehand. Turns out I had a slow leak in the front right and off went the warning in the middle of nowhere. Upon inspection I found the tyres to look fine but creeped at about 70km/h to the next roadhouse where I found the front right @ 30psi when the others were around the 38psi mark. I was very impressed with the warning system as it alerted me to the issue before it got out of hand!

There is a hack to enable this on vehicles without the button:

I keep thinking I should give it a shot, especially if it's as good as you lot make out

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Tyre pressure sensor - false warnings...

                      Hi all,

Is it common to have your tyre pressure warning light go off? It happened a couple of weeks ago and VW just reset it after some 'checks'. Late last week it has gone off again... I have checked the pressure on all tyres (over a couple of consective days) and no leaks.

Does anyone know how to reset this?

Is the senor monitoring actual air pressure or change in rolling diameter of the tyre (or something else?)?

I have rung VW to ask them to tell me how to reset this, but they insist on me coming in... Which is fine given i have my usual DSG gearbox compliants to harrass them about. At least it's all under warranty for now.

                      Thanks!

On my 2009 Jetta you just hold, for a few seconds, the button in the row at the bottom of the dash just in front of the gear selector.
When it references; it lets out a single chime, same as the one that comes on with the warning and light on the dash, as well as removing that warning light.
Think it works on the comparative "behaviour" of the individual wheels in conjunction with the ABS more than an actual sensing of tyre pressure or diameters; in that a "hard" tyre will behave differently to a "softer" one.

Sometimes you need to do "Basic Setting" on the TPMS and thats why the dealer wants the Golf in the dealership. Its because the ESP unit needs steering angle and tyre info. Until it has the data, it will through a TPMS warning. Alternatively, the Steering Controller comms is intermittant to ESP and may need changing. There may be faults in the 03- ABS controller like 1325, 2757 or 3159.

If you have VCDS, Basic Setting is done on Controller 03 - ABS Brakes. Performed by using measuring block 042 set to Basic Settings and then exit. Do B.S. first and then clear the faults (not the faults first). Faults should change to permanent to sporadic following B.S. and then they can be cleared. That may clear the random warnings unless the steering angle sender from Steering Controller 16 is faulty.

                          C.

The actual air pressure is not monitored
The rolling diameter is calculated by watching the left/right wheel RPM via the ABS sensors
When they differ by a set tollerance the alarm goes off
(As RW1 pointed out - steering angles and wheel/tyre info come into play)

When you do the reset it has to get a baseline again.

I had new tyres fitted, same day the tire pressure sensor went off, I just reset it and all was well

One thing worth checking, get your car into a tire shop and up on the hoist
Have a look at the left & right front tires - check for uneven wear
If the wheel alignment is out and the car has scrubbed one side that could set the alarm off

This is not the usual dash switch cancel when it repeats warning randomly for no apparent reason. Resetting with the dash switch after a tyre change or puncture or tyre inflation or geometry change is normal and the switch's use is to be expected.

There is a known fault when it is multiple and random for no obvious reason. It is cleared by the short procedure I wrote above using Basic Settings followed by fault clearing.

Right, which would explain why they want him to bring it in...
