Sorry. When you said "Manual. Full Stop" I thought you were indicating that you were talking in absolutes i.e. without qualification. I didn't realise you were restricting your comment to Golfs only. Then you then went on to talk about "auto", where this thread is about Manual vs DSG. So I figured you were widening the discussion.

So, you've driven a DSG?
This thread is about mk6 golfs. I answered the questions Lucas posed: Mine is manual. Why? Because it gives me more control. Yes, I've driven the DSG many times. I consider it an automatic.
No one can seriously argue that a MT in a mk6 Golf doesn't give the driver more control over the vehicle than a DSG.

I'm still struggling to understand how somebody who "can't drive an automatic" knows that a manual gives the driver better control. Based on what experience? I own a manual sports car and a DSG Golf, and I drive them both hard.
To me, the only downside to the DSG is that I can't put my hand on the gearstick and figure out which gear I'm in - I need the display on the dash. Other than that, the gearchanges in the DSG (using the paddles on the wheel) are so much faster and crisper that it's no contest - decide to change, and it happens. No lifting the throttle, no balking of synchros, no danger of missed gear changes.
The DSG is a different driving experience - there is no doubt about that. Are you sure you tried hard enough to learn how to drive it properly?
What is amusing here is the discussion moving from what do you have to which is better. Waste of time really as it has the same amount of credibility as which colour is better or worse ( we all know RB is better ) Technically the DSG is far superior than the manual, provides a better power delivery, smoother ride and quicker. The Manual is a different experience and for the purists that like that sot of thing and feeling involved and a level of rev control in the process, given that the car all but drives itself due to the amount of tech built in all power to you.
My guess and that is all it is, that the majority of manual owners don't live in Sydney, the constant porridge stirring required of the gear box in the ridiculous traffic we have is just not worth the fleeting opportunity you might have to "be in control" of a performance car. For the rest of us the DSG is like the rest of the car , a perfect compromise.
Now back to normal programming

Define control in a meaningful sense.
Yes, a manual allows you to slip the clutch, which can assist in low-speed manoeuvring (eg parking). Yes, a manual allows you to more precisely match revs and slip during a hard launch when playing Traffic Light Grand Prix. Yes, a manual allows you to abuse or destory your clutch if and as you see fit. And yes, manual allows you to change gears at any moment, when you feel it appropriate.
In the vast majority of cases a DSG will also allow you to select your preferred gear at your chosen moment - but there are a few exceptions. People who are used to a manual and who drive a DSG may feel that they have less control, because they are actively making fewer decisions on the go. Like anything, vehicle control takes time and skill to master - and new or different technologies can sometimes set you back. Look at radar cruise control as an example.
A manual does not allow you to change gears faster or more smoothly. In certain circumstances a DSG can allow for greater control in corners, by shifting seamlessly and without hesitation, and thereby not introducing a sudden reduction and reapplication of power mid-corner which can unbalance a car.
At any rate, arguing over Manual Vs DSG in terms of "control", without clarification, is like saying that steak and chips is the best food ever. You may think that, but it's hardly fact.

I'm really upset to find out that for the last 130,000 KM that I've driven I have not been fully in control and I could have rectified that had I purchased manual cars!

Now, now, we all know Reflex Silver is the best!
Where do I register my vote for steak and chips?
Cheers

Yet another colour that reminds everyone that it is indeed a kitchen appliance, you will get along fine with the CW owners. Just make sure all the other kitchen items are brushed aluminum.
Your vote for the manly meal of steak and chips has been noted, though I sense if you own a reflex silver car you don't have it with beer like RB owners but Lemon Lime and bitters like CW owners
Am also sorry to hear you have been out of control for so long

Okay guys, thanks for your contributions but the discussion of the virtues of manual vs DSG car control has gone far enough. If we want to discuss it, someone can start a thread on it in the General Discussion forum, and contributors should keep personal insults out of it, thanks.
It has also occurred to me that some possessors of drivers licenses believe that manual gearboxes should be banned, because they present too much of a distraction to the driver. I would guess that such people believe that "control" of a vehicle has a different meaning again.
