DSG services are every 4 years or 60,000km, whichever occurs first. Getting that done through a dealer will set you back closer to $1k; a good independent (and/or sourcing your own DSG oil) should reduce that bill significantly.

As that car's a 2011, it'll be due for the DSG service in the next 12 months or so irrespective of mileage. And if it hasn't had its 45,000km / 3 year service yet, it'll need that now.

That car is definitely overpriced. It's neither low mileage nor optioned or accessorised at all. I'd highlight these facts and push for $24k.

We paid $19.5k earlier this year for a 2010 GTI with 55,000km, white, manual, reverse camera.

Also bear in mind its not an "automatic" gearbox as such. The gearbox in these is quite a sophisticated unit and is actually a manual gearbox with a computer that controls the clutch and gears for you (thats putting it simply). They are a good gearbox but factor in $600 or so every 4 years to have it serviced.
You forgot to mention that you paid wholesale trade in price from a Skoda dealer. Not a private price.

When I sell my car, say a dealer offers me $19k trade in and a private buyer also offers me $19k, I will obviously take the dealer offer and be done with it. No hassles. No extra time spent, drive in, pick up new car and leave old car

      • Here is a comparo,

I just bought a MINT 2010 GTI, 5 door, Red, Leather, 18" Detroits, brand new Michelin ps3S, APR Stage 1, Carbonio Intake, 65ks, Paid $22K. The car is in perfect condition - could not believe my eyes when I saw it. I bought it privately. The guy selling it got an S3 sedan - I like.

        Cheers

        • Would love to grab a deal of that value, but haven't seen anything yet. Almost all listings on carsales and gumtree have been basic models with relatively high prices. Hopefully this guy goes for 24k as I'm happy to pay that if its in good condition.
          Thanks for all the replies!

          • I sold my 2011 GTI in Feb with only 22kms for $28.5k within a day of advertising it. Granted it was sometime ago and the market has moved on a bit, so all these prices in the high $20s are plain stupid.

              • Still looking day in day out for a 2011 Gti, a majority of them are fairly overpriced unfortunately.

I think it also comes down to the presentation of the vehicle.

A mate just sold his M3 for about $10k above book value. It was immaculate & had full history of services by a top independant plus full detailing history. He sold it within a week to the first looker and they didn't haggle over price.

You need to learn to haggle. Make an offer of what you think it's worth and be confident. The worst they can say is "no". Leave them your number & walk away if they don't want to play ball. I've had so many people ring me weeks (even a couple of days) later offering to sell me their car at my offered price. They are crestfallen when you tell them you bought off a person willing to negotiate. Just to twist the knife a bit I tell them a price considerably less than their lower, revised price.

How odd. Usually the bargains are in MEL.

                          • I just dodged a major bullet. Found a great bargain in Melbourne and was on the brink of flying down tomorrow to buy the car. Luckily I was told to do VIN check on carhistory.com.au and the PPSR Report revealed a collision/economic repairable write-off......

That's a bit of a generalisation. I've just sold my 2010 Mk6 GTI for just short of $30k. (Mine was immaculate, well specced and accessorised, 31,000km, APR stage 1 and had the balance of an Allianz extended warranty policy.) In the end I didn't need to advertise it, but was approached by an interested party who was prepared to pay what I wanted.

I am willing to bet with my big HUG against all your heavily geared 4 Brisbane rental properties + your tracktor Range Rover Evoque that you would not say a word or even a letter like that prior to the sale of your GTI
