  • So all owners with a recall are going to be annoyed?

    Seriously?

Recalls happen for a lot of different cars all the time. I don't see how happy owners who are affected by it will suddenly be unhappy owners.

    • I didn't say annoyed, you did.

I said 'a loss of confidence'. And I reckon that having your DSG repaired/ replaced and also knowing that it is a worldwide recall would generally result in a loss of confidence in the long term viability of economical ownership. And that would be with owners who have previously had a trouble free gearbox. The ones that are on their 3rd gearbox repair have already lost any confidence in the product. And anyone who has experienced (or worse, their wife or daughter has experienced) the 'loss of forward motion fault' while driving can reasonably be expected to be ready to cut and run.

You may be a touch smug with your 6sp DSG (the good one). But anyone with a 7sp problematic DSG with an out of warranty repair bill of around $10000 may be a little less so. I wonder if they will get a refund on repairs already carried out now that VWA is acknowledging the failings of their gearbox just like VW has done elsewhere in the world.

Have to agree with what was said regarding a repair that was charged to an owner for a faulty gearbox before the recall was announced. Will Volkswagen Australia reimburse previous repairs to the DSG? I in fact know many owners personally who are in this sort of position. I would like to know what rights are there in that scenario.

              Oh, right.

Oddly, I feel more smug about my ability to cook a roast shoulder of lamb with garlic & honey than my choice of gearbox.

It seems that hysteria has affected both of us. My eye for detail and your spelling and recollection of names. Sounds to me like a draw.

Enjoy your manual golf. May the gods of reliability shine upon you and the curse of twin chargers and DSG fall elsewhere.

                    • Give it 6 months and everyone will have forgotten about it. We live ina 24 hour news cycle world.

Lots of people are still buying Toyotas despite massive recall campaigns in the last few years.

Haha Brad, you’re such a joker, a real winker.

Anyway this playground ride is starting to make me feel a tad nauseous. I’m getting off.

                          • Buying a MK6 GTI!

                            Hey guys,

Exciting times, I am in the market for a pre-owned MK6 GTI. I was previously looking at MK5 GTI's, but I thought since I'll be looking to keep this car for some time I may as well go the MK6. I don't want to have regrets, especially with the MK7 GTI around the corner. I also feel the interior of the MK6 after sitting in both is light years above the MK5!

Anyways, I am going to have a look at this car next week. Can any of you guys fault it? It's currently the cheapest MK6 GTI manual on Carsales right now. I'm looking to spend around $30k.

In terms of options that doesn't have many, although the base model MK6 comes with enough! No HID's, sunroof or leather. Although I love the tartan seats the misses thinks otherwise lol.

Any advice on what to look for when I go see this? Or even is anyone on the forum willing to give a shameless plug into me buying theirs lol?

                            Thanks,
                            Damian

                            • Hi Damian,
You're best bet is to take the car to a VW specialist and get it checked over. They usually charge around $100 for this and it's a very worthwhile investment. I'm sure one of the Melbourne crew on here can point you in the right direction of who to go and see. And welcome to the MKVI fold!
