That all depends on the particular lights and adapters you're referring to.

I have the RDash LEDs myself, and made up some custom resistors for them (after disassembling my first set of RDash heatsinks - the first set were faulty and they sent me a second set), and they work a treat. Very low heat and no bulb-out errors at all, thanks to the spec of resistor I've used.

There are various LED and adapter/resistor combos available, many of which work fine.

          • I previously had the globe LED's, but after a week or so, they blew.

Ended up buying the full LED housing that you find on ebay for $45... heaps better.

^ They are worth every cent if your after a bright look. I've had them for over 1 year on the mk6 golf with no issues at all.

                        • The other has some seriously large butt ugly resistor banks (but I suspect with coding, you could avoid needing to fit them).

^ as mentioned by tonymy01 - the cheaper (Racing Dash) LED's have a little resistor/heat sink box (about the size of a match box) that is needed in order for the LED's to work properly. They fit up inside the bumper cavity and use double sided tape to secure on a ledge. Mind you, there are stacks of Mk6 users with these Racing Dash lights (including myself) and they work perfectly. No errors, no issues and super bright.

These JOM units are new to the market, and i have not seen any photos of the light output that these give. Until these JOM units became available, the only option was the Racing Dash brand and another brand which i cant recall the name of right now. But Racing Dash were the more popular ones.

I like the fact that the JOM units don't need the resistor box, but they only have 3 LED's so the light output will be less than the Racing Dash units which have about 18 LED's or so.

                            • I used to use the Racing Dash lights, with custom adapters I soldered up (the RDash heatsinks were rubbish quality and occasionally caused a fault code for me). That solution worked well - as mentioned, they are bright and throw a fairly uniform light - until the wiring into one of the LED housings started to fray at a point that was difficult to access or repair, causing the light to cut out intermittently.

So I bought OEM LEDs and adapters from carsystems.pl; cost about $100 all up. The light is far dimmer than the RDash LEDs overall (they utilise two large LEDs rather than 10+ smaller LEDs), but also draw a lot less attention to the numberplate area. Overall the look is much more OEM. The only downside of this for me is that it's now harder to see the ground via the reversing camera when backing up at night. The build quality of the LEDs and adapters is vastly better than the RDash units - as you'd expect given the higher cost.
