If you think that's bad, wait till you try releasing a parking brake on a yank car I was renting. I swear, I was in the parking lot at the car rental for about 30-45 minutes.

    Hand brakes easy.

This one had a foot brake. But unlike others which had a toggle release, this just kept getting tighter. I dug around for a release button. Couldn't find any. Ended up reading the manual fiddling with the lights in the dark and finally found the release button. I can't recall where it was in the end, but I can tell you, it was nowhere intuitive.

Back to the flap, it's a fairly common thing these days, I thought to just press to unlock. A label would look pretty naff. IMHO.

I don't find it particularly intituitive to have to push the cover to open it. I would imagine a lot of people who loan their MkVI Golfs to friends/relatives unfamiliar with this would eventually get a call from them asking how to open it.

Either a lock on the flap, an internal release button or perhaps a embossed sign saying 'push here to open' would much more user friendly.
Surely searching everywhere for the button to release it (which is never consistent across cars) is just as time wasting?

Agreed. That's annoyed me several times with rental cars.

That's where I'm coming from. I used to travel a lot in my old job and was jumping between a Hyundai Elantra and Getz, Toyota Yaris, Corolla and Camry, Mistubishi Lancer and 380 and a hateful, hateful hateful Nissan Tiida.

Every single one of them was different. Every single button was in a different location. Can't remember all the details, but some of them may have had no button and they are the easier ones to deal with.

Yes even with the MkV. I sure wasn't expecting it there

Everytime I am in a rental or courtesy car, the first question I ask is the location of the fuel cap release

I have never had an issue even though I have rented cars in Japan, Australia and even in the Cook Islands. I even used to drive Pantech trucks, Izuzu Utes and Mitsubishi 4WDs with no issue locating the fuel cap w/o having to read the manual first. The release for most Jap cars is usually at the base of the drivers seat, usually next to the boot lid release.

The MkVI was the only one that stumped me with it's very intelligent design. Perhaps designed to appeal to the iPod generation.

If one has difficulty locating the release on the MkV (even in the dark), I suggest they get their eyes tested as the button is backlit and in the same general location as the release on a Jap car.

I've put only 1 tank into the VW. Push to open caused maybe a 1sec delay in getting it open, as I didn't see any other option but push.

Anyone who can't figure that out will not be getting my keys.

Oi! Them are fighting words. Don't you dare refer to me as the iPod generation again, unless you are looking for trouble!

                    • Perhaps a dealer flaw is being exposed here, as I might've expected to go through all this sortof stuff on delivery.

If people are that stupid that can't work out how to open a petrol tank, whether by button or by pushing the flap, they probably shouldn't be driving.

No need for tough words like that mate. Some people may excel in something else.
